ATTIRE FOR ALL

Collection by Postmen HUGE SORTING TASK After a rough sorting the clothes collected through, the “Postman’s Knock” effort of Saturday week are now being classified into bundles of men’s coats, men’s waistcoats,'men’s trousers, w- - dresses, girls’ dresses, gii:./ coats, men’s underclothing, women's underclothing, children’s and baby;s clothing, in order to facilitate the work of distribution by the inter-church committees. . So far requisitions for this clothing have not been made, nor are’ such requisitions desirable until next week, when the sorters should be well on with their work, but it is not the intention of the committee to wait until everything is sorted and classified before the distribution takes • place. This will be managed, as far a‘s possible, while the major work is going cn. These considerations have had to be made, for the drive proved to be at least twice as big a thing as anyone connected with the movement anticipated; but the forces and the Smith Family and the inter-church committees have rallied round in good strength and order out of chaos has been well established in the old power-house in Mercer Street.

Something like a co-ordinated system has been devised. Goods of a certain character are all taken to the one spot and there done up in bundles, the ont sort ready for distribution are tied in net bundles and placed in a certain heap, a note being taken of each bundle by a check system. Those garments in this class are placed in the repair heap, to be sent away to be mAde whole again by the unemployed girls and women who are working in the premises above the Smith Family’s offices. The same scrutiny is being given to the mountains of boots and shoes at the back of the station. In about another week or ten days it is expected that there will be an exact tally available of the number of bundles of clothes of various kinds, which will be immensely helpful to the inter-church committees.
