AMATEUR BILLIARDS

OPENING GAMES PLAYED Inter-club Championship The first two games in the Wellington inter-club amateur billiards championship were played last evening at Billiards Limited’s show-room. E. W. Petersen (Cairo Club) beat G. Fitzgerald (St. Patrick’s Old Boys’ Association), 300-263, and A. Ireeman (RS.A.) lost to D. Rosenbaum (Y.M.C.A.), 210-300. In the first game both players were in the early stages suffering from strain, but settled down after the first hundred and showed themselves capable cuists. Only one break fell to each, 31 to Petersen and 24 to Fitzgerald. The second game was a fairly even contest to the half-way stage and was productive of more breaks. Rosenbaum has a good tournament temperament, and was very consistent. Freeman did not show his usual form. In the closing stages Rosenbaum forged ahead steadily to win by 90. The breaks were: Rosenbaum, 29, 22, 28, 35, 21, 27 ; Freeman, 21, 27, 20. The games for to-night are: 7 p.m., P. Devine (holder) and C. B. Eversleigh (Cairo Club) ; 8 p.m., V. A. Stevens (Y.M.C.A.) v. W. J. McMillan (Wellington East Fire Brigade Club). In the early game the champion will probably find himself fully extended by Eversleigh, who has a nice style and touch, and is capable of three-figure breaks should he get the touch. Devine, however, shows himself at his best when extended. The entries for the championship. 21, exceed all previous records, and. include some promising players who have not hitherto competed in this or the New Zealand event. The increased interest has been largely stimulated by the billiards league club contests inaugurated last season, and the new club competitions which started this season. The present holder of the championship is P. Devine, Petone Working Men’s Club, who won it last year for

the first time after playing in it for many years. An ex-champion. Mr. WN. Tinker, who has held thp honour on three or four occasions, is in Australia, and this is the first occasion upon which he has not competed for many years past. Other past holders of the championship who are again playing are H. JShanks (Wellington Working Mens Club), A. Freeman (R.S.A.), A. Duncan (Y.M.C.A.), the last-mentioned in previous years having represented the R.S.A. E. Petersen (Cairo Club) is a past champion of Auckland Province.
