PLANTING OF TREES
Arbor Day To-morrow “INVESTMENT IN BEAUTY” To-morrow is Arbor Day—a da J’ dedi-cated-’to trees. . Throughout the world lovers of the beautiful in Nature will ’’mark the day. by planting a tree or a shrub .in their gardens, in school grounds, and in parks. The simple Arbor Day ceremony actually is an investment in beauty—a wise, practical action enhanced by a charming custom. The day originated in 'the United States, where Mr. J. b. Morton, Secretary for Agriculture during President Cleveland’s second term (nearly 40 years ago), proposed an annual holiday on which the community could be released from workaday activities, and left free to plant trees wjjere they were desired. The proposal caught tlie imagination of the people of the United States, and from that time Arbor Day has been a national holiday and tree-planting festival, the material resiilts of which have increased the arboreal wealth of tlie country enormously. The Arbor Day tradition is by no means limited to the United States, and although the observance of the day in the Dominion is not general, it is to be expected that tomorrow many young trees and shrubs will find permanent place in gardens and open spaces they are destined to adorn.
