Wages Tax and Levy

Sir, —In “Notes of the Day’’ of your issue of Friday, it was gratifying to observe that the position of some of the ordinary wage earners was realised in some quarters. They pay both wage tax and levy on a sometimes very meagre wage, which carries with it no extra assistance such as Red Cross help and cheap boot and shoe mending. One’s heart goes out in all sympathy to those relief workers who are unable in many cases to supplement their relief pay bv any extra earnings, as their need must indeed be great, especially at such times as when the levy falls due.—l am, etc., ONE OF THE HARD PRESSED. Upper Hutt, June 10.
