HOW TO RAISE FLOWERS LN A WINDOW BOX Windowsills are often small, ami great, care is needed to get exactly the right sort of box ornamentation aud the right sort of flowers. First, as to the box. But be sure to use good enamel to paint It. Rub down the surface of the wood with sandpaper. then wipe with a damp eloih and leave to dry: if the surface is not quite smooth repeat this operation two or three times. The final appearance of the box will not be perfectly satisfactory if the wood has a rough sur-
face. Any knotholes can be filled in witli putty. Though the design is so simple it will be wise to draw it out on paper the size of the side of bos. and transfer the outline to the wood by mean.-, of carbon paper (or rpb all over the back of the drawing with a soft pencil). White flowers will look best in lhe boxes. Sweet alyssum is also suitable: it grows to a height of about six or eight inches. White campanulas are charming. C. attica alba should be sown in October (thin out well'There is also candytuft; the variety “Little Prince.” a few inches high, is covered with little white blossoms in summer.
