THE PROUD KETTLE—WHY HE WAS DICARDED

The proud kettle lived in an old widow’s home, which stood in the darkwood, long years ago. He had a friend with whom he used to have great fun. One night he and his friends were having a concert between themselves, and the proud kettle said be would dance a jig. So he began, and just as he was finishing he tumbled and made a terrible din.

On hearing this the widow awoke, came into her kitchen, and saw the proud kettle on his face. She was very angry, but she picked up a cloth and cleaned all the litter up, and then hurried off to bed again. But no sooner had she gone than the two kettles broke into conversation.

The next day the proud kettle had to do a lot of work, and he got very black, so he was rather angry, and wasn’t very much in the mood to do work, being too proud to try. In the afternoon the proud kettle was thrown away on the rubbish heap. lie lay there for a long time, till one day lie rusted up to nothing, so that was the end of the proud kettle.- —Original by ‘"Evening Twilight.” aged 0.
