IMPRESSIVE TRIBUTE

Late Sir Alexander Gray BIG FUNERAL YESTERDAY One of the longest ami most, impressive and representative funerals witnessed in Wellington was that of Sir Alexander Gray, K.C., which left the residence 111 Brougham Street, for the Karori Cemetery at 2.45 p.m. yesterday. As evidence of the regard and affection in which he was held in the city it was noticed that among the hundreds who actually attended the funeral and the thousands lining the streets near the residence were representatives of all classes of the community. All were anxious to show their respect and esteem for one, who in the conduct of his private and professional life, his innate courtesy and gentility, made life-long friends with all with whom he came in contact. The cortege of motor-cars extended the full length of A’ivian and Ingestre Streets—from Cambridge Terrace to Upper Willis Street. Indeed at least a dozen cars had turned the corner into Willis Street before the last one had rounded the corner from Cambridge Terrace into A r ivian Street. An entire room full of the choicest floral wreaths, particularly rich and glowing in their autumn colouring, were fragrant tributes. Prior to the •funeral a service was held at the residence. It was conducted by the Rev. J. R. Blanchard (St. John’s) and Rev. James Baird (Kent Terrace), who also officiated at the crematorium at Karori.
