FIRE STATION SITE
Expert’s Report Received CONSIDERATION ON FRIDAY The Fire Board was about to discuss the question of a site for the new central station at yesterday’s meeting, when some of the members stated that rhev had not had time to examine in detail (he report of Mr. Fetor Holgate, the expert in earthquake-prevention construction, who had been called upon to examine and report upon the alternative sites at Clyde Quay. At present tiie situation is that tiie board favours the acquisition of Hie Clvde Quay School site at n cost of £25,000, lint the City Council has made an offer of a portion of the corporation yards site nt Clyde Quay for a sum under £20,000, claiming that as halfpartners in Hie board preference should lie given' to a City Corporation site, all other things being equal. Tiie City Council employed Mr. A. Campbell to report on the Corporation site, and his report represented that the reclaimed land site was, with proper foundations, every bit as good as that of (lie Clyde Quay School area. As the latter site is founded upon solid rock —and earthquake risk is a paramount consideration in the location of a fire station —(he board decided to call upon Mr. Peter Holgate, an English expert, who lias made a special study of earthquake strain and how to provide against it in buildings, to report on the respective sites as regards their suitability for the particular purpose in view. Mr. Holgate’s report was placed in the hands of members yesterday, and it was decided to hold the matter over for consideration at. a special meeting of the board, to be held at 10.30 a.in. on Friday next.
