PREVENTION OF FIRE
New Khandallah Station BOARD LOOKS TO FUTURE In view of the growing population of the Khandallah and Ngaio districts of North Wellington, the Wellington Fire Board decided at yesterdays meeting to call for tenders for Hie erection of a new fire brigade station, to accommodate one permanent fireman and two auxiliaries. In view of the growing need for bettor protection, recent efficiency tests were conducted by the superintendent, Mr. C. A. Woolley, in conjunction with Hie inspector of fire brigades, Mr. K. Girling Butcher, in order to ascertain the time occupied in local auxiliaries getting to work, and also how loug it look an engine from the Thermion station to reach the scene. The evidence so gathered seemed to warrant an improvement in the service. One proposal was to station a permanent man in lodgings near the existing station, but the superintendent and the inspector agreed that, in view of Hie high value risk of the proper ties in the district it would be better to set up a small station, with living quarters for one permanent man and two auxiliaries, on the economical lines of the suburban stations in Auckland. That of Avondale was mentioned as an ideal station for such a district. Only a portion need be erected to begin with, additions to be made later on as the demand grows. Such a station would cost about £6OO. The board considered this a better proposition than boarding a permanent man out there, and at the same time it would serve as the beginning of a standardised station for the future. With a Hale pump fitted to the Khandallah engine it was considered that Khandallah and Ngaio would be much better served than at present.
