'Pho final meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council before the civic elections was held last night, the Mayor, Mr. A. J. McCurdy, presiding. There were present: Crs. J. P. O’Flaherty, G. H. Guthrie, J, Blcwntan, F. P, Keys, aud A. Howell. Mr. 11. G. Tettglc presided nt the regular meeting of the Hutt Valley High School Board of Governors last night. Members present, were: Messrs. D. A. Ewen, W. A’. Dyer, J. Stonehouse. .1. Kerr, J. C. Burns, H. Sladden, and Captain W. Olphert. An apology was received from Mr. P. Robertson. RETURNED SOLDIERS Hutt Valley Association ACHIEVEMENT & PROGRESS The opinion that the past year had been one of aeliievcment aud steady progress was expressed iu the annual report, presented at the annual meeting of the Hutt Valley branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. The president, Colonel Colquhouit, presided. Due to (he present economic conditions ami the consequent unemployment, many calls had been made on the branch's funds. The membership was twenty-five short of hist year, and it was agreed that an appeal should be made to all returned soldiers to join Ute association and assist in the splendid work it was doing for the unemployed. The balance-sheet, indicated that the funds of the branch had been carefully administered during the year. The.most important part of the year’s working has been the relief o£ distress, and the sum of £309/0/8 was expended on orders for food, clothing, medicine, and footwear. Altogether, 265 Cases were dealt with, and much-appreciated relief afforded. Approximately- 270 families received Christmas cheer to the extent of £lO4, and many letters of appreciation were received bv the branch. Regular grants were received from the Canteen Trust Board Fund, Poppy Day Fund, and Rose Day Fund, through the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association. These grants were supplemented to some extent, from the branch’s general fund. Colonel Colquhouti pointed out that, two vice-presidents of the branch, Messrs. J. AV. Andrews and G. Findlay, were standing for the mayoralty of Lower Hutt and Petone respectively, ami felt sure that every returned soldier would wish them success. TERMS OF A LEASE Park for League Players Terms of a lease of McEwan Park to League football players were outlined byUr. C. I’. Brockelbauk, chairman of the reserves committee, to the Pctoue Borough Council, at its last meeting. The reserves committee recommended that, the League players be granted the lease of McEwan Park from April 1 to September 39, at a rental of £lO a year, witli (lie stipulation that if the ground were vacant for more than two playing Saturdays, the council has. the power: to terminate the lease. The formation of this trio was an outstanding event, of the European musical season of 1932. us all three members of the combination bad already established reputations as soloists of the very front rank. USE AS GOLF COURSE Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt Au application from "several golf enthusiasts” for permission to use Maidstone Park as a golf course (luring the winter months met with a doubtful reception from the Upper Unit Borough Council last night. It was stated in the application that the park would uot be used on Saturdays. .Sundays, or Mondays, or at any time when the park was iu use. Cr. J. P. O'Flalierty pointed out. that the caretaker had complained previously of the park being used as a golf course, and the council had prohibited the practice. On the mayor’s suggestion, it was resolved to grant permission for a mouth under the supervision of the caretaker. “That, will put the players on their good behaviour," observed the mayor. PARIS H lONE RS’ SI EETING - St. James’s, Lower Hutt There was a large attendance at. St. James’s Hall on Thursday evening when the annual meeting of parishioners el: St. James's Church. Lower Hutt, was held. The Rev. H. E. K. Fry, who presided, said that it was just eight weeks siuce the parishioners tendered him a pleasant welcome, and in that time be had been able to form a few impressions. He had been gratified to find there was a tine body of helpers iu the church, for without their loyal assistance little headway could be made. In conclusion MrFry expressed the hope that the parish might be a inissionary-hearted one. The report stated that, because of the depression, offerings would probably not reach the total of former years, and the women of the congregation had been requested by the vestry to organise winter entertainments. They bad responded splendidly; and a satisfactory sum had been raised in consequence. ' Recently, the former vicar, the Ven. Archdeacon A. L. Hansell, had, with Mrs. Hansell, been farewelled at a gathering of parishioners. Deep appreciation of Mr. Hansell's ministry was expressed on that occasion. The Rev. W. E. Davies, who received a call to Fairlie, and Mrs. Davies, were also farewelled that evening. Shortly afterwards the parishioners welcomed their new vicar, the Rev. H, E. K. Fry, and Mrs. Fry, The new curate, the Rev. 11. V. C. Reynolds, was also welcomed. Most satisfactory and encouraging Reports of the choir, C.E.M.S., the Mothers’ Union, St. James’s Girls’ Club, and Sunday school were also included. The Waiwetu and Belmont churches reported progress as to both finance ami attendance, and St. James’s Tenuis Club had well maintained its position among the clubs of the valley. The following members of-the vestry were elected: Messrs. AV. IL Barker, A. AV. Foote. G. L. Gieson, 8. M. Hobbs, 11. A. Sines, H. B. Robb, AV. 11. Smith, A. S, Kempthorne, Cowie, and Arnold. Mr. AV. J. Jarman was elected vicar’s churchwarden, and Mr, R. E. House parishioners’ churchwarden, aud Mr. Arnold representative to Synod. Supper was dispensed by the women.

Mr. M. J. Daniel, manager of the Bank o£ New Zealand, Petone, has returned from a motor tour of the South Island.
