The discovery that a flock of 000 of his breeding ewes bad been worried by dogs during the uight and GO smotbered in a swamp, was made yesterday by a sheepfarmer at Mauku, Mr. M. Finlay. . , The dogs had driven the Hock on to a roadway crossing a swamp, with :i gate at the far end, and pressure from the sheep behind forced the leaders over the edge of tho roadway into the water, where they were trampled down by others of the Hock in their terrified efforts to escape from the dogs; In addition to Hie GO sheep which were smothered, Mr. Finlay bad to destroy two which had been badly mauled. Seven were rescued from the swamp in a weak condition and may not survive. Last night dogs again appeared on the property and worried, a flock of this season’s lambs. With the cowing of dawn, Mr. Finlay shot an Alsatiau dead and wounded a. cattle-dog, which he later traced to its kennel and destroyed. Ten lambs were lost during the night. Only the two dogs were seen.
