OBITUARY

Mi’. F. W. Tighe Mr. F. W. Tighe, for many years a Government messenger at the Magistrate’s Court, where he was also custodian. and latterly in the .Treasury Department, died at his residence in Northland Road on Tuesday. Mr. Tighe had many friends in his work and in Northland, where he lived for about thirty years. He took a prominent part in the work of the Methodist Church. Mr. Alfred Lewin The death occurred at 'Martinborough on Wednesday of Mr. Alfred Lewin, at the age of 61 years, states a “Dominion” Special Service message. Tht late Mr. Lewin was born in Arlingworth, England, and came to New Zealand when three years of age. lie was a resident of Masterton for 22 years before going to Martinborough, where he had carried bn business as a hairdresser for the past ten years. He was a keen rifle shot and fisherman. The late Mr. Lewin is survived by a widow and family of two sons and four daughters. Mr. D. M. Sutherland The death took place suddenly at Ngaipu, Hinakura, of David Malcolm Sutherland, at the age of 79 years. Deceased was the youngest son of the late Mr. Alexander Sutherland, who came out to New Zealand from Scotland in the ship Oriental, landing on the Petone beach in December, 1839. Mr. Alexander Sutherland took up land at Lyall Bay, Akitio Flats, and Ngaipu. The locality of the Lyall Bay property is now known as the Melrose Estate, and it. was here that the late Mr. David Sutherland was born. At the age of 22 years Mr. Sutherland married .Helen, the eldest daughter of the late Mr. Donald Ross, also of Lyall Bay. Three years later, on the death of his father. Mr. Sutherland took up the Ngaipu estate in the Wairarapa, in partnership with his eldest brother, William. On the death of Mr. William Sutherland the estate was divided, Mr. David Sutherland retaining as his share the present station known as Ngaipu. The other half of the estate is now called Moeraki. and is still held by the family. In 1906 the late Mr. Sutherland bought a section on the Kelbnrn Heights and his Wellington residence i is still at 16 Central Terrace, Kelburn. He gave up active work on his station . in 1913. leasing it to bis three sons, Alexander, William and Kenneth. Of these, William was killed in the war at Passchendaele. The other two sons have since successfully carried on the estate. During his busy life in the Wairarapa Mr. Sutherland did a great deal to aid worthy causes and many settlers in the valley owe their success to his kindly help. The late Mr. Sutherland leaves a widow and a grown-up family of four daughters and two sons. These are: Mrs. R. W. Roydhouce, Carterton: Mrs. J. Prendeville, Wellington; Mrs. E P. Cameron. Pahana; Miss Mary Sutherland. Ngaipu; and Messrs. Alexander and Kenneth Sutherland, Ngaipu. The Interment will take place at Martinborough, the funeral leaving the ■ Ngaipu homestead on Saturday afternoon at 1.30 p.m. after a short service in the bouse, and arriving at Martinborough at 2.30 p.m.
