SALARY BORROWED

Careless, but Not Theft By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, April 27. “This man has been guilty of nothing more than irregularity in borrowing money,” said Mr. W. R. McKeen, S.M., in dismissing a charge against John Patrick Martin of stealing £ll/12/3 from the Railways Department. An audit inspector said that the accused, who had been employed by the railways for 20 years, had borrowed his fortnight’s salary a few days before it was due and had put in the till a slip which was really an lOU. This was found by the auditor. The accused had been dismissed from service and was now unemployed. The magistrate said that the accused had been careless, but nothing more.
