FIRE ON THE HILLS

Baseless Alarm in Christchurch

There was great excitement in Christchurch on Friday evening when many persons jumped to the conclusion that the Cashmere Sanatorium buildings were in flames, states the “Lyttelton Times.” A queer effect of the fire, which raged in dry grass along a slope a considerable distance west of the sanatorium, was that gaps could be seen through the flames, giving the impression of a long building being gutted.

The gaps were provided by tussocks on top of the spur just north of the flames. The sanatorium buildings, which were fully lighted, could not always be seen by those persons who caught sight of the fire between rows of city buildings, and the actual spur on which the sanatorium is situated was difficult of location at night.
