SOCCER “ASHES”

The Council of the New Zealand Football Association has decided to place the urn containing the “ashes” played for by the Australian and New Zealand Football Associations on view for the benefit of the public in a day or two. The casket, made of New Zealand timbers, contains the ashes of the cigars smoked by the captains of the New Zealand and Australian teams at the smoke concert at the conclusion of the New Zealand tour of Australia in 1924. The ashes were sealed in a plated razor blade case which went through the Anzac Cove fighting during the war. This was enclosed in the casket, the key of which is in a secret receptacle in the base of the casket. The trophy has not been on view since it was brought back to New Zealand in 1924. The New Zealand team will take it with them on leaving for Australia next month.
