“POPPY DAY” APPEAL
Excellent Response Made by the Public NEARLY £9OO IN SIGHT Thursday was Poppy Day, when the Wellington public was asked through a street appeal to aid returned soldiers in distress. The response was such that nearly £9OO is in sight It says a good deal for the feelings of the general public that few were able to resist the appeal made by the collectors who so willingly assisted the executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. The weather was fine, and the city streets were thronged with people intent on their week-end shopping. No one was pressed tb contribute. Promptly at 7 a.m. units of women took up their places at pre-airanged stands throughout the city and suburbs, and carried on throughout a busy day until 5 p.m. The money was paid in to the office of the Returned Soldiers’ Association iu Victoria Street, where the secretary, Mr J. Spence, and the members of the executive, were kept hard at work until 9 o’clock in the evening, when the money then to hand was paid into the bank. ... The revenue returns and othr sources were as follow:Stand. £ A ? In addition to the above receipts there, are returns still to come in from the Upper Hutt, Eastbourne, Porirua, and Paraparaumu. The results from Lower Hutt and Johnsonville were telephoned through to the R.S.A. headquarters, the total, from the former borough being given as approximate. This should mean a final total of nearly £9OO. All the collecting boxes were sealed up before being issued, and each collector had to sign a receipt for her box as she received it.
The" loss of a collecting box from the Woodward Street stand is reported. The box was empty when it was stolen, but whether it was used by the thief for collecting money was not ascertainable. Those in charge of the stands were:—
