THE RACING WORLD

EASTER CARNIVAL STARTS TO-DAY Auckland, Feilding, Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay G.N. OAKS AND CHAMPAGNE STAKES Fine Weather and Fast Tracks: Reviews of Form (By "The Watcher.”) The racing carnival associated with the Easter season will open to-day with meetings at Auckland, Feilding, Hastings, Tauherenikau, Riverton and Beaumont-Tuapeka. The Auckland, Feilding, Wairarapa and Beaumont meetings will he concluded on Monday. The Waipukurau meeting will be held on Monday, when racing will also commence at Illccarton. Riverton Is a tbree-day meeting, running over Monday and concluding on Tuesday, which will also be the second and concluding day of the Canterbury fixture. The win-and-place system of betting will be in universal operation. The principal events for to-day are the Great Northern Oaks, Champagne Stakes and Easter Handicap at Auckland; the Manchester Handicap at Feilding, the W. E. Bidwill Memorial Handicap at Tauherenikau, and the Hawke’s Bay Cup at Hastings. As fine weather has been usual throughout the country tracks should be in good order, and at Feilding, Tauherenikau and Hastings are likely to be fast.

AT TAUHERENIKAU W. E. Bidwill Memorial GOOD INAUGURAL FIELD (By "The Watcher.”) Fields £or the Wairarapa meeting are, on the average, smaller than usual, but there is plenty of material for a day of interesting racing. This meeting m always popular with Wellington racegoers, and with convenient rail and road services available there should be a large crowd present. Trains leave Lambtou at 7.50 and 8.53 a.in., return fares being 5/- first class and 3/6 second class. A special train will also run from Woodville 6.45 a.in. and Masterton 9.42 a.m. Win and place tickets will be available at the one window for backers desiring to back a horse both ways, but those who desire only a place investment must go to the place windows. The raeft track is likely to be firm and fast. The programme and timetable is as follows:— 11.30 a.m.— NEWMARKET HANDICAP, of 115 sovs. Six furlongs. Royal Bengal 0 0 Projection ~7 0 Good Hunting 8 3 Palace .... 7 8 Sir Pornbal . 711 The form horses are Royal Bengal, Good Hunting, Sir Pornbal and Projection. Royal Bengal ran a fair race at Stratford. though his form has not been so good lately as it was a few months back. Sir Pornbal has only got to run up to his best form to be hard to beat. The favourites may be Sir Pornbal and Royal Bengal. 12.10 p.m.— FERRY HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. x Six furlongs. Good Hunting 0 D Aroma .... 7 S Haulbowline 811 Movietone .. 7 0 Mistfer Quex 713 Palace .... 9 1 Cape Fair (inc 3lb. rehep.) 713 Good Hunting is also in the opening event. He cannot be discarded in either. Haulbowline looks a probability on his recent form, though six furlongs is quite far enough for him,. Mister Quex showed at Pahiatua that he was fast coming on, and he should run well. Cape Fair is now on form, and should be well supported. Aroma is a possibility. Most money may come for Cape Fair and Mister Quex. 12.55 p.m.— s W. E. BIDWILL MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of 225 sovs. Ono mile and a quarter. Lady Pam it G Miladi .... 7 7 Chopin .... 8 G Navabo .... 7 0 Spearful .. 8 G Clangor ... 7 0 Arrow Lad . 8 3 Golden Horn 7 0 Atholspear ..8 1 Lady Pam and Golden Horn are bracketed. Chopin and Spearful, the probable favourites in the principal race, are also engaged at Feilding. Spearful will probably be nt Feilding, as no rain has fallen, but most likely Wairarapa racegoers will see Chopin. Lady Pam has to be considered, though she seems unlikely to attain, her best form again. Arrow Lad is likely, but Atholspear will have to improve. Miladi is in another race, but if started may be fancied. Navaho is likely to need sharpening up. but either Clangor or Golden Horn should run well. The latter has been doing good track work, but it is out of the ordinary to expect a maiden performer to win a race of this description. On the whole, the popular selection may be Chopin and Arrow Lad. 1.35 p.m.— WAIRARAPA NURSERY HANDICAP, of ■ . 110 sovs. Five furlongs. Lady Nan .. 9 fi Windward .. 7 5 Dollar I’rlncc 8 3 Secrecy ... 7 3 April Fool ..8 1 Quebec ... 7 3 Quietly .... 710 Melisandc ..7 3 Quietly, Windward, and Melisande are bracketed. Lady Nan’s winning form is the best among the youngsters. Dollar Prince has accomplished "fiothiug since he beat her unexpectedly in the spring at Masterton, but April Fool, won at Napier and looks dangerous to-dhy. Of the balance, comprised of Trantham representatives, the moist likely are Quebec and Secrecy. Quebec will be unlucky to be unplaced on the way he ran at Pahiatua, biit most money looks likely to go on April Fool and Lady Nah. 2.15 p.m,— TVHITARATA HACK HANDICAP, of 110 sovs. One mile. Courtyard .. 811 Chile 711 Capetown ..8 3 Morrath ... 710 Knlpiuck (inc. Cardinal Moon 7 7 31b. rehep.) 8 0 Courtyard’s second to Speed at Napipr at his last start will assure him solid support in the hack mile, and he looks like running well. should . offer solid opposition, and Morrath looks to have a fair prospect. Chile is a winner on the course, and Cardinal Moon may surprise. Courtyard and Kalmuck look likeliest. 2.55 p.m.— MARTINBOROUGH HANDICAP, of 115 Sovs.; minimum weight 7.11. Seven furlongs. Miladi 9 3 Lucky Alice . 8 11 Lady Spy .. 9 2 Projection .. 711 Navaho .... 813 Vitaphone .. 711 Miladi, reserved for the seven-furlong event, should run well. Lady Spy is a form prospect, also, and Lucky Alice’s Stratford running gives her a good chance. Most money may come for Lucky Alice and Miladi. 3.35 p.m.— MOKAI HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Seven furlongs. Clangor .. 9 3 Roynl Dash . 7 9 Haulbowllpe 8 9 White Squall 7 9 Bonnie Vale 8 0 Aroma .... 7 7 Lady Ronald Rhea 7 0 (incl. 51b. rehep.) ... 8 0 As Clangor seems likely to start in this race, his prospects may be labelled bright. Haulbowline does not appeal over seven, but Bonnie Vale, Lady Ronald, Royal Dash, and Rhea all look likely. Rhea should run a good seven. This looks one of the most difficult problems backers are faced with on the day, as practically all the runners have to be given a chance, and the result may be a surprise. The favourites may be Bonnie Vale, Lady Ronald, and Clangor. 4.15 p.m.— MAIDEN HACK, of 100 sovs. Seven furlongs. Tena 8 7 Rene Belle .. 8 7 ilazoor ... 8 7 Trader Horn 8 7 King Walton Park 8 7 Thomond 8 7 Grand Blow . 8 7 Korero .... 8 7 Colossical . 8 7 The maidens are not representative of anything , but moderate form. Hnzoor, King Thomond. Rene Belle, and 'Walton Bark hive the best credentials. The public may go for Walton Park, Hnzoor and King Thomond.

Mr. Tomkinson is a son of the trotting trainer. Mr. W. .7. Tomkinson. and Mr. McDermott is also a well-known trotting trainer.

FIELDS AT FEILDING ♦- ■ • The Manchester Handicap SPRINTERS ARE GOOD CLASS (By “The Watcher.”) Feildiug has drawn its usual quota of useful horses, and as the majority have been showing form, surprises should not be unduly frequent, though there are several newcomers. The track promises to be in good order. The programme is as follows: — 11.30 a.m.—KAWAKAWA HIGIIWEIGHT HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. One mile and a distance. Adventus ..10 5 Fine Acre .. 9 0 Chief Line ..10 4 Park Acre ..0 0 Miss Hushabye 0 5 Mercian Prince 9 0 lied Flush .. 9 5 Crown Link . 9 0 Okopua ..9 4 Form among the Highweight runners points to good races from Adventus, Chief Line, Miss Hushabye, and Red Flush. Okopua might run well, while Mercian Prince and Crown Link cannot be left out of calculations. Most money may come for Adventus, Chief Line, and Red Flush. 12.10 p.m. — ONGO HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Six furlongs. Chief Marlon- Freeze 7 10 ette 8 9 King Peg ... 7 9 King Win ..8 8 Pladio 7 9. Beaconsfield . 8 5 Dick Miss Cavendish 8 3 Whittington 7 8 Kotaki Eka . 711 Koreroa .... 7 7 Lapstonc ... 711 Beryl Latour 7 6 Tentcall .... 710 Chief Marionette is the best form proposition in the Ongo Hack. Those that racer! at Stratford do not apitc.nl much, but there are some likely new comers such as Beaconsfield, Kotaki Eka, Freeze, Pladie, and Dick Whittington. The best backed may be Chief Marionette, Beaconsfield, and Freeze. 12.55 p.m.— \ MANCHESTER HANDICAP, of 250 sovs. One mile and a quarter. View Halloo .90 Richfield .... 7 8 Chopin 8 6 Shrewd .... 7 4 Spearful .... 8 6 Copper King , 7 0 La Poupee .. . 8 0 Juggle .... 7 0 The position in the Manchester Handicap is complicated by the fact that both Spearful and Chopin are also engaged at the Wairarapa meeting. Both will run well wherever they race. View Halloo should be prominent, though it is possible there may yet be a bit of sting in the ground for him. La Poupeo is a possibility on her recent form, while Richfield. Shrewd, Copper King, and Juggle must be accorded a chance. Backers may choose the best form as that of View Halloo and Spearful,

A.J.C. MEETING La Moderate Only Filly SEVEN IN ST. LEGER Acceptors in Main Events By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received April 14, 6.30 p.ni.) Sydney, April 14. The following are the acceptors for the principal events for the opening of the A.J.C. autumn meeting at Randwick tomorrow : — AUTUMN PLATE, of 1000 sovs.; w.f.a. One mile and a half.

Great Star's non-payment of forfeit in the Doncaster is an oversight on the part of his owner-trainer, J. . Prosser, as he is still at, Riccarton. Under the conditions governing the race he renders himself liable for the whole stake. Latest information from Sydney indicates that the New Zealand representatives are not given much chance in final selections. La Moderne was not considered even for a place, nor was Golden Hair greatly fancied, and Autopay is nt good double figures. A. Knox will ride Golden Hair,— “The Watcher.” HAWKE’S BAY CUP Racing at Hastings • INTERESTING MAIDEN (By “The Watcher.”) Good fields are carded for the Hawke's Bay meeting. Ebcum is the only runner to fill a place. Toxmiss Ims shown promise and is bred to improve. Mr. Currie’s pair. Spiral and Rust, should be ready now. Mr. Symes’s bracket, Hint and Pukehou, may also run well. Pukehou showed speed at Napier Park. Hark Forrard, if she improves on Pahiatua form, has a chance, and there are one or two well-bred ones among the unknown quantities. The Spiral-Rust bracket and Pukehou may be best backed. 3.55 p.m.— ONEPUHI HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. One mile and a distance. ELLERSLIE NOTES Golden Wings in Form BEST GALLOP FOR TRACK Dominion Special Service. Auckland. April 14. There were several brilliant gallops yesterday. Golden Wings, carrying about S.O, went brilliantly all the way to finish up five furlongs, going strongly, in 1.1 2-5. This is the best gallop ever registered over the present track, and it lias brought the topweight into strong favour for the Easter Handicap. I’agauelli, carrying more weight than Golden Wings, also galloped remarkably well over five furlongs in 1,2. He did his work attractively and considering his weight, his effort would be almost equally as good as that of Golden Wings. Another Easter Handicap candidate, Sea Ruler, went brilliantly to equal Paganelli’s time, 1.2, for five furlongs. He is a lightweight who will now come into favour, particularly as he has a partiality for easy track conditions. Lordly Knight and Chief Cook finished in front of Manawhenua and Mahkill at the end of seven furlongs in 1.31, a good gallop, with Lordly Knight and Chief Cook making friends for their Easter Handicap engagements. Aga Khan and Gold Trail were going well at the end of seven furlongs in 1.32 1-5. Both horses could have done a little better. Mr. J. M. Cameron said Gold Trail would in all probability start in the Easter Handicap instead of the Oaks. Lady Quex and Sunny Sky were doing better than Merry Damon at the end of seven furlongs in 1.31 3-5. They could have done better, and both gave impressive displays. Princess Doreen was going comfortably in front of Inflation over six furlongs in 1.1 S 2-5. The filly gave a very pleasing display, and Inflation shaped much better than on Tuesday. There was not a great deal of activity to-day. Paganelli strode over six furlongs in 1.22 1-5 without being extended at any stage. Emancipation and Sir Musk sprinted half a mile in 52 1-5. Emancipation bears a well-seasoned appearance. Prolyxo was going very easily alongside Eager Rose over five furlongs, in 1.4 4-5. She will contest the. Oaks in preference to the Easter Handicap. Aiguille was going better than Seatown and Callamart at the end of a mile in 1.44 2-5. although it was a good effort for al! three. Aiguille pulled up well, and is regarded as a certain starter in the Easter. FIXTURES. April 8. 10—Westport .T.C. April 15—Tuapoka County J.C. April 15—Hawke’s Bay J.C. April 15, 17—Wairarapa R.C. hawera trots Final Glance at Card programme for to-day

(By

“Overcheck.”)

The acceptances fo'r the opening day of the Hawera club’s meeting are somewhat disappointing, but nevertheless the racing promises to be of an interesting character. . The programme is as follows: — AUROA HANDICAP, of 65 sovs; 3.45 class. One mile and a halt. Demand .scr Min Bells ••••*“ Dimhoe Sales Jax •••• Locanda . scr Worthy Chief scr Diltest scr Gohlen Harvest 48 Florrie Real . scr Belinda King 48 l The only ones in the Auroa Handicap that have any public form to commend them are Belinda King,-who won at Wanganui 12 months ago, and Golden Harvest. The latter won nt Wellington in January, registering 3.25, and on that form is entitled to the greatest respect. Sales Tax comes from a strong stable, and may prove the best of the scratch division.

MATAPU HANDICAP, of 65 sovs.; unhoppled trotters; 0.00 class. One mile and a half. May Dorset .. scr Derby Thorpe 12 Cervine scr Kohewah .... 60 Malaya scr Sphinx 6U Bed Eagle ... scr Hue Coronado 144 SC Of P the scratch section in the Matapu Handicap, Red Eagle looks the most likely. Last season she ran second to Louis Bingen in a big field at New ton, going 3.44 3-5 on a slow track. Derby Thorpe has recent winning form as a pacer and is now being tried as a trotter. Kohewah is a useful sort, while Sphinx won over 2 miles at Manawatu recently. Red Eagle and Derby Thorpe may be the popular selections.

STRATFORD HANDICAP, of 65 sovs.; 3.0 class. One mile and a quarter, rraekcr scr Raider scr Fisher scr Te Mahanga .. scr Gold Seam ... scr Smooger On Thames form. Raider appears to hold Gold Seam and Te Mahanga safe in the Stratford Handicap. Cracker is useful, while Smooger’s win at the recent Manawatu meeting entitles him to consideration. However, at a difference of 36 yards, Raider and Cracker may prove too good.

HAWERA CUP. of 175 sovs.; 4.46 class. .Two miles. T.inella scr Winshow .... scr Teri King! ..scr David McElwyn -4 Belle o’ Mine . scr Special Sun .. 48 Eleawah scr . „ Belle o’ Mine won the Manawatu Cup in such easy fashion that she must be "iven a great chance, notwithstanding that she now meets Eleawah, Winshow, Teri Kingi and Special Sun on worse terms. David McElwyn did not contest the Manawatu Cup and this race to-day is the type that should suit him. The three that may have their numbers hoisted are Belle o’ Mine, David McElwyn and Special Sun.

NORMANBY HANDICAP, of 65 sovs.; 3.5 class. One mile and a quarter. Bic Blaze scr Mln Bells scr Daphne , ’ 6 " Locanda scr Lady Zoe Demand .... scr Tui Coronado . -4 njltest scr Golden Harvest -4 Golden Harvest, Big Blaze and M orthy Chief may divide the stake in the Normanby Handicap. I have already referred to the performances of the firstnamed. Big Blaze was an indifferent third to Te Mahanga and Iron Man at Manawatu. while Worthy Chief wa fourth at Te Aroha.

MANAIA HANDICAP, of 70 sovs ; unhoppled trotters; 3.45 class. One mile and a half. Kohewah ... scr Call Boy 36 .... set Neil Volo. “0 Aerial Boy ... ?6 Hue Coronado 84 Nell Volo, Aerial Boy .and Sphinx should play their part well in the Manaia Handicap. The first-named is a very good sort and will probably b? a warm favourite.
