WOMAN IN A RAGE
Evidence in Court Charge GAOL FOR BAD LANGUAGE Describing herself as “just a lonehand woman,” Kitty Stewart, aged 88, who appeared before Mr. T. B. McNeil, S.M., in the Police Court on Thursday, made a lengthy plea for lenient treatment. She was charged with drunkenness, with using obscene language in Haining Street, and with a breach of her prohibition order. All charges were admitted. On the obscene language charge she was sent to gaol for three months, and on the other two was convicted and discharged. According to Senior-Sergeant Dempsey, accused was in such a rage when she came under the notice of the police that she was frothing at the mouth. Accused, lie added, had a long list of previous convictions, and this was the second breach of her prohibition order. Accused, having been given permission to say a few words, alleged that she was never given a chance. Admittedly, she said, she had a past, btu she was not allowed to live it down. In her opinion the police would do much better in their work if they turned their attention *to the Haining Street pakapoo dens instead of arresting a lone woman there. TJie Magistrate: Yes, hut all that has nothing to do with this case, It see you have a long list of convictions dating back to 1918. Accused replied that she was just a lone-hand woman,” and thought that a fine would meet the case. When she heard that she had to go to gaol, she left the dock, saying: “I think you re very hard, sir. You should have given me a chance.” Charge of Assault Charged with assaulting David Browning so as to cause him actual bodily harm, Cyril Otto Foothead, presser, aged 22, was remanded until April 26. Bail was allowed. Detective-Sergeant Revell said that following an assault on Browning on Wednesday evening, the incident wag reported to the police. Inquiries were made during the night, and Detectives Robinson and Campin later arrested accused. Mr. G, Joseph, who represented accused, intimated that Foothead intended to plead guilty. It was only fair to state, he added, that it was not a case of attempted robbery. There was much more in it than appeared on the surface. Remands Granted On the application of Detective-Ser-geant Revell, Allan SV. Wishart, blacksmith, aged 42, was remanded to appear at Petone on April 26 on charges of forging a cheque for £5/8/-, and of failing to account for £6/1/2.
