The number of passengers carried by the Eastbourne ferries from April 1 to February 28 shows a considerable increase as compared with the previous corresponding period. For the 1933 period 364,970 passengers were carried, an increase of 961. On the other hand the 43,906 passengers carried during February is a decrease of '3277 over the previous year.

One case of infectious disease was notified in Lower Hutt during February, reported the acting-borough engineer, Mr. R. F. Mainland, to the council. Sixteen miscellaneous licenses were issued by the Lower Hutt Borough Council during February. For these, £l4/6/8 w-s collected in fees. BOXING TOURNAMENT Bouts at Upper Hutt MANY KEEN CONTESTS That- boxing has a keen following in the Upper Hutt district was evidenced by the large crowd which attended the boxing tournament organised by the Silverstream Community Sports Club in the Cosy Theatre. Upper Hutt, on Monday night. The boxing was, for the most part, of a high standard, and the crowd was kept keyed up with excitement.

Mr. E. Perry was the referee, and the judges were Messrs. A. Curtayne and W. P. Sommerville. Mr. George Aldridge, of the New Zealand Boxing Council, was also present. During the evening an exhibition bout was given by J. Meachem and Bob Coghlan. , ' Results of the contests are as follow: — K. Cameron (lost. 21b.) outpointed J. Wyeth (lost. 71b.). Cameron showed a better knowledge ot the game, and gradually beat down Wyeth’s defence. Wyeth was sent down for the count . ot eight in the third round, but recovered and put up a decidedly spirited display in the last round.

R. McKendry (Tst. 131 b.) defeated C. Harris (Bst.). Both went hard at it. and gave the spectators plenty of thrills. McKendry established his superiority in the second round, and gained the decision.

ponahue (Bst.) outpointed Flnnagen (Sst.) in a somewhat spasmodic bout. Both showed a knowledge of boxing science, and when blows were exchanged there was no doubt about It.

A.'McDowell (Bst. 121 b.) beat T.’Griffen (Sst. -lib.). Both lads boxed well, and for some time the issue remained in doubt. Blows were freely exchanged in the last round, with the advantage slightly on McDowell’s side.

G. Gollop (10st. 51b.) drew with T. Langley (Ost. 111 b.). Probably one of the most eventful bouts ot the evening, this fight provided a wealth of action. Standing toe to toe, tho fighters slogged steadily at each other, and excitement waxed high. Gollop had the advantage of a longer reach, but Langley stood up to him gamely. R. Wood (Sst. 81b.) defeated M. Gard (Sst. 61b.). Both lads “mixed it” willingly. and some hard blows were exchanged. Wood got in some telling blows, and carried the decision.

C. Callingham (list. 41b.) defeated J. Murphy (list. 61b.). Packed with action, this contest gave rise to plenty of hard hitting and heavy swings. The aggression was evenly divided, and the last round saw some concentrated fighting.

C. O’Halloran (Wst. lib.) beat F. Ward (lost. 21b.) in an evenly-matched, although not unexciting contest.

Doji/as (4st. 81b.) defeated D. Duncan (4st. lib.) in a bright display.

K. Plummer (sst. 61b.) drew with T. Dunn (sst. 61b.) in a spirited bout.

INTERCLUB TENNIS

Final of Tournament

The final of the fourth grade in the Hutt Valley interclub tennis tournament was played on Saturday, when Taita defeated Central by 14 sets and 84 games to 2 sets and 54 games. . This completes the interclub tournament, and the champion teams are:— Senior, Lower Hutt; junior, Trentham; third, Koro Koro; fourth, Taita; fifth, Waiwetu. Club championship, . Waiwetu.

The representative match to be played with Wellington next Saturday and the tournaments at Easter are the closing activities of the local tennis season. The Easter tournaments will comprise men’s and women’s doubles in seniors, junior, and third grades on Easter Saturday, and men’s and women’s singles in the three grades on Easter Monday. Each tournament will be played on the “Yankee” principle to ensure players several matches each.

In the senior and junior doubles events play will be the best of 17 games, and in the third grade the best of ll cames. in the singles the senior and junior men will play three set matches (third set advantage), and all other matches the result will be the best of 17 games. Entries dose for both events at 5 p.m. on Monday. April 10. Detailed results of the fourth grade final are as follow:—

Much interest is being taken by Hutt Valley tennis players in the exhibition match which is to be played on Saturday at the Petone Central Club’s courts. The team is comprised of the leading players from Wellington, and as all or them are entered for Master tournaments they should all show their best form. Don France meets Noel Wilson,in the men’s singles, and this match should prove exciting, as each have met recently when France beat Wilson by a very small margin in three sets. , The following is thb order: of play :— Women’s doubles: Miss Nicholls and Mrs. Melody v. Mrs. France and Miss Whyte. Men’s singles: France v. Wilson. Mixed doubles: Mrs. Melody and Perkins v. Miss Whyte and Roussell. Mixed doubles: Mrs. Franco and France v. Miss Nicholls and Wilson. Men’s doubles: France and Koussell v. Fcrkins and Wilson. . Two sets will be pluyed n all the inntclies.
