TRANSPORT APPEALS
New Phase of the Act ‘‘AUTOMATIC” LICENSES A new phase of the Transport Licensing Act is about to come into operation on the application for the renewal of what have been termed “automatic” licenses for motor transport services. The automatic licenses are now expiring in the North Island, and the local licensing authorities will shortly be dealing with the applications for renewals.
Under the Act proprietors of motor services who could show that they had been operating substantially the same services since March 31, 1931, were entitled last'year to an “automatic” license, the term of which in the North Island expired on February 2S, 1933, and in the South Island expires on August 31 next. On the expiration of the term of the “automatic” licenses all applicants for renewals must prove to the satisfaction of the local licensing authority that their services are necessary and desirable in the public interest. It is possible that a number of applicants will not be able to satisfy the licensing authority on this point, with the result that there may be many appeals to the Transport Appeal Board. There may also be appeals by holders of licenses against renewal of other licenses which in the past year have been automatic.
