KILLED IN A DRAY
Man Pinned Under Wheel CAPSIZE IN RIVER-BED By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christdiurcli, March 20. A farmer, of Parnassus, Frederick William Leaman, aged 50, was killed by a dray overturning in the bed of the Waiau River, when he was returning from a fishing expedition. The shafts snapped as the dray was mounting a bank. Dr. E. I. Cooke, of Lincoln, the other occupant of the dray, was pinned underneath for four hours and received painful leg injuries. The dray, drawn by two horses, was laden with the effects of the fishing party which was returning from the mouth of the river. Mr. Leaman, who was driving, had with him Dr- Cooke. The other members of the party, including Dr. Baxter and Mr. Buryman, of Gore, had gone on ahead. Mr. Leaman was pinned under the wheel, and it Ls believed that death was instantaneous. Dr. Cooke was held fast by the heavy wheel,' and suffered a great deal of pain. The advance party waited on the road for some time before returning to investigate. Dr. Baxter quickly discovered that the driver was beyond aid. Dr. Cooke was exhausted by his sufferings, though still conscious. Mr. Leaman was well known to fishing and holiday visitors to the district as a guide.
