Thorndon School

Sir, —I read with much interest your report of a plan to celebrate the “Diamond Jubilee” of the Thorndon School. In the report is the name of the late Mr. W. Mowbray. The Thorndon School of my time was in Sydney Street, and Mr. Mowbray was the schoolmaster. I was under the impression that the one was merged into the other, but it appears not, as it is at least some 65 years since I was a scholar at that school, if not. k little more. Mr. W. James, late S.M. in the Wairarapa, was a scholar under Mr. Mowbray, and one of the sons of Mr. Brown, of the Royal Hotel, now Hotel Cecil, I think we called him “Dolly, was another. .... x „ I have no record of that time, so am only guessing, but.l. think I ain right? If my surmise is correct, how does a “Diamond Jubilee” come in at this date? The Te Aro School was kept by Mr. Holmes, and I knew him well, as he was connected with the cadets, I think. However, I trust the function will be a success, and I wish all a pleasant time.. It is a long time to look back to, but it is pleasant to hear of my old. teacher’s school being honoured by a Diamond Jubilee. It was about ’66 or ’67 that I joined the Wellington Cadets, and I was at school then. We drilled in the old school ground, under Captain Aicken, and then under. Captain C. P. Powles, but that is another story. Kia ora to the Thorndon School. The names mentioned in the report, including Sir Michael Myers, Chief Justice, Mr. P. Myers and Mr. Martin F. Luckic, are of a later date and generation.—l a “’ etC ” ‘ MARK MAXTON, J.P.

Greytown, March 18. . [The Wellington Education Board s record of the commencement of the ihorndon School is as follows: ‘Mr. Mowbray was appointed to the headmastership of the Thorndon Free School (Jat er . “ : Paul’s) on March 26 1873 . The school opened on March 22, 1873. J
