DUKE OF THE ABRUZZI

Death Occurs in Rome UNUSUALLY ACTIVE LIFE (Received March 19, 6.30 p.m.) Rome, March 18. The death is announced of the Duke of the Abruzzi, the famous explorer and sailor. Intrepid explorer and mountaineer, the Duke of Abruzzi -was also an Italian naval officer of distinction, having served in two wars, the Tripolitan War of 1912 and the Great War. He was in command of the navy from 1915 to 1917. The Duke of Abruzzi’s most famous feats of exploration were in Alaska in 1897, the Arctic from 1899 to 1900, the Mountains of the Moon in East Africa in 1906 and the Himalayas in 1909. A politician of wide experience, the Duke was also prominently associated with the Italia Line until in October 14, 1932, when he submitted his resignation as president. The reason given was his inability to bring about harmony among executives of companies that used to be competitive. The line was formed of companies serving both North and South America.
