FETE AT KARORI
Y.W.C.A. Garden Party
The Y.W.C.A. garden party, postponed from February 25, was held in the grounds of Air. and Airs. B. 8. Sutherland, “Homewood,” Karori, on Saturday afternoon and evening.
The fete was opened by Airs. R. Gardner, president of the Y.W.C.A. Airs. Gardner apologised for the absence of Airs. Forbes, and thanked Air. and Airs. Sutherland very warmly for their generosity in lending their grounds. Besides throwing their grounds open to the public during the past three weeks, Air. and Airs. Sutherland had both taken a very active interest in arrangements for the day. . < Mrs. Gardner wore a black coat over a dark silk marocain frock. Her hat was of shining black straw. < Airs. Sutherland wore a gown of ninon patterned in delicate shades of brown and fawn. Her /hat was of brown tagel straw. Miss Jean Sutherland wore a fashionable afternoon frock of floral mariette in yellow, patterned in red and blue. Her hat and shoes were a delicate duck egg blue.
The gardens were at their best, the flower beds ablaze with attractive blooms. Large masses of purple petunias brightened either side of the long drive. The begonia house with its line idisplay of blooms, and the cool shady ferneries, were a source of pleasure to all. The big lawn was giiy with flags and bright, tempting stalls. /
Everyone enjoyed seeing Air. Sutherland’s aviaries. Birds of all sizes, shapes and colours, such as people in New Zealand never see, seemed very happy and quite at home in their well equipped houses. Mr. Sutherland arranged a competition, in which votes were given for the five most-beautiful birds. No trouble was spared to make the day eventful and enjoyable. Side shows, games of skill, guessing competitions, and swimming sports, all contributed toward the fun.
Sports were held in the swimming pool, which is surrounded by trees and large bushes of hydrangeas. -There were several scratch races, and exhibitions of diving. - The final for the Wellington Central ladies’ clubs 100 yards was won by Aliss J. Campbell, from Lower Hutt, in 73 4-osec. Aliss J. Wright, of Wellington, was second. During the afternoon music was provided by the Port Nicholson Silver Band, and Charlie the Clown entertained the children with games and singing. From 5 to 0 Aunt Molly from broadcast the children’s session from the grounds. Aliss Bridgeman, secretary of the Y.W.C.A., and Miss Scott, Wellington secretary, were in charge of the arrangements. Stall holders were as follow: —Sweet stall, Alesdames H. D. Bennett, Temple White. Carmichael, Jenson, Fitch, Alisses Fair, Kirk, and Ronayne; work stall, Alesdames Pearson, Lawson, and Hislop, Aliss Carncross; cakes, Aliss Veitch and helpers; soft drinks and ice creams, Aliss McCrea, Aliss Long, Alesdames Young, Wilson, Aliss Peach, and Aliss Taylor, members of the Round Table Club, Y.W.C.A. residence, and Y.W.C.A. senior clubs; games of skill, Mrs. Boyd, Misses Scott, Herd, Taylor and Lowe; competitions, Aliss Joy Pearson, Air. McCrone, Air. Fern. Air. Johnstone helped with the stalls, and Air. Fancourt arranged the .decorations. ■ Among those present were Air. and Airs. Slade, Dr. and Airs, arid Aliss Gillies, Airs. Lyons, from Hawke’s Bay, Airs. Purdie, Mrs. Aloote, Miss Moore, Aliss Mac Lean, Airs. AVilson, Mr. and Mrs. J. Mitchell, Airs. James Hislop, Mrs F. Pope, Airs. Adams, Airs; E. C. Wallace, Airs. Pearson, vice-president of Y.W.C.A., Airs. Wright, Airs. AfacAlillan, Airs. Norman, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Hislop, Air. and Airs. PaviourSmlth, Airs. J. D. Sievwright, Aliss A. Dimock, Air. and Airs. C. Dodd, Aliss Al. Stiles, Mr. Porter, of England, Aliss Audrey AlcCrea, Airs. Tomlinson, Aliss G. Fraser, Mrs. H. D. Bennett. The fete was continued during the evening, when the lawns were all gailj lit with coloured lights. The guests were entertained with •fireworks, Highland dancing, and model yacht racing on the swimming pool. They also enjoyed Punch and Judy in the old English style. The Port Nicholson Silver Band and the Highland Pipe Band were in attendance.
