THE RACING WORLD

GOLDEN WINGS’ RACE RECORD

Brilliant Win in Challenge Stakes

FINAL DAY’S SPORT AT TRENTHAM

Totalisator Turnover Shows Increase of Over £20,000

PRINCESS ARGOSY SURPRISES IN AUTUMN HANDICAP

(By "The Watcher.”)

The Wellington Racing Club concluded a very successful meeting at Trentham on Saturday in fine, warm weather. Once or twice it became very overcast and rain threatened, but 101 the most part the day was sultry and almost oppressive, Racing again reached a high standard though generally the wins were decisive and the finishes not so close as was the case the ni st day. All the way wins were scored by Golden Wings and Princess Anfosy in the North Island Challenge Stakes and Autumn Handicaps respectively. Golden Wings put up a time record for the Stakes, running the seven furlongs in 1.242, which Js Ism. better than the 1.25 of Silver Link in 1921, Gascony in 1927 and Rercmoana in 1928. Golden Wings’s win was not without Incident. His weight In the race-book, 9.0, was incorrect, as with wins during the season at Auckland, Wanganui and Woodville, he had earned a 51b. penalty, bringing his weight up to 9,5. He weighed out at 9-0 and went to the post, but , the error was discovered in time for him to return and Reed to weigh out at 9.5. Had he won with 9,0 he would have suffered disqualifiea-, tion, possibly not on the day but certainly as soon as the mistake was discovered. . , , Princess Argosy’s opponents allowed her to run along smoothly and without exertion in the early stages of the Autumn Handicap, and when within sprinting distance of the winning-post she opened up a gap and they never looked like tackling her. She was handled with great judgment by W. H. Jones. Bayacre atoned for his defeat in the Thompson Handicap by a win in. the Suburban Handicap. He was just too good for the consistent Lordly Knight. Generally form worked out well, but there were some reverses and big dividends attached to the wins of Senegal and Princess Argosy. The attendance was large and the wagering always brisk, but peculiarly enough the increase for the day was just below that of the first day. The total for the duy was £34,071/10/-, an increase of £10,432. The total for the meeting was £03,605/10/-, compared with £42,491 last autumn, an increase of £21,173/10/-. The weather on the first day last year i was showery and fine on the second day. Two years ago the totalisator put through £08,930/10/-.

Takakua Wins Easily. Takakua scored an easy win in the Highweight. Azure made the pace from Granado, Red Flush, Adventus, and Takakua, Revision and March Alone bringing up the rear. Takakua came through in the straight and drew well clear, his winning margin being pronounced. March Alone came through the field for a decisive second, with Red Flush third, Granado fourth, then Owlsflight and Aladdjn. The winner won like a good horse, and nothing had any chance with him, the only surprising thing being that he was not better backed. Aladdin was an interesting runner, He finished last, but made a showing while his condition lasted, and pulled up sound. Red Manfred Improves, Different class, different rider, and different tactics saw Red Manfred score a decisive win jn the two-year-old race, Morris allowed him to- drop back in the early running and did not ask him for an effort until the straight was reached. Here Lady Nan was clear, but Red Manfred wore her down and .won well. Bay Tree was always fairly well up, and he ran on for third from Trivet, and Gay Sheila was next. The unlucky runner was Trivet, who •tumbled at the false rail when just , in behind the leader, Lady Nan, An inquiry was held into the running. It transpired that Red Manfred lost his .place

early'through the outside horses crowding- in, while Trivet touched the heels of Lady Nan. No action was deemed necessary. A Sensational Dividend. Speed had a reversal of luck in the hack mile, getting left, while Rebel Song, the favourite, got chopped back early. He secured a lucky run up on the rails to a handy position almost immediately, but his bad luck was not ended as he fell just as they had straightened up for the judge. The win of Senegal" saw a sensational dividend hoisted on the straightout machine as he carried only 27 tickets. There was no fluke about his win for after Copper King had collared the leaders, Royal Dash, Chief Light, and Silver Sight, Senegal came at him and went on for a decisive win. Zeebrugge plugged on for a fair third, but never looked like doing better. Worship was fourth, then Royal Dash, Speed, and Chief Light. Rebel Song was going well at the time he fell, and would have been hard to beat, but Senegal won well. Speed ran a great race after losing so much ground. Chief Light had every chance. An informal inquiry was held into the fall of Rebel Song, and it transpired that he was going so well that he got too close to those in front when pulling out for his run, got on to their heels, and came down. Frlpcess Argosy Surprises, Backers suffered another severe reverse when Princess Argosy, 3 rank outsider, scored a runaway win jn the Autumn Handicap. She led all the way. The pace was moderate early, and Shatter soon dropped back'to last. With nothing inclined to go up and take on the leader, she ran on well within herseif until within good sprinting distance of the post, and then she set off. Nothing ever afterwards looked like getting to her. Shatter came up from the rear, and was second all the way up the straight, but he weakened again in the last strides and got squeezed out of that place by Eminent. Gay Crest was fourth, thcn’Spearful and Rocket. Nothing had a chance with the winner, but it was not a true run race, the first half taking 55sec, She was allowed all her own rules, and it looked as if Eminent and Shatter, who at one stage drifted right back, were a bit unlucky. A Race Record, Golden Wings led from qnd to end in the North Island Challenge Stakes. Inflation and Fracas followed him in the running, Fracas going past Inflation in the middle stages. Autopay whipped in, having got away badly. Once in line, Golden Wings came on and won very comfortably from Inflation, who beat Midian just as easily. Autopay was fourth, then Fracas, Guarantee, and Pegged Exchange, ' The winner was very lucky, not in winning, but to avoid disqualification through an oversight regarding his weight. He weighed out at his book weight, 9 stone, but he had to carry a 51b penalty, They were actually at the post when the error was discovered, and the horse brought back to weigh out correctly, the start being delayed. It was a fortunate discovery. Inflation Is returning to form, and Midian was the best of the two-year-olds, Fracas disappointing badly by her failure to run on. The time, Imln. 24jaec.. is n fraction better than the previous best, held jointly by Silver Link, Gascony, and Reremoana. Martinn Chief’s Mile. Martian Chief won decisively in the open mile, Ho held a handy position in behind the lenders, Green Linnet and Lady Spy, to the straight, and then came on to win without difficulty, First Acre never further back than third or fourth ran on for second place and there was a close finish for third between Tout le Mond and Mlladi. Slight was fifth, then Cricket Bat, Lady Spy, and Kerbside all bunched. It was a good thing for Martinn Chief, who would be a very profitable horse if ho did not bleed. First Acre retains his form in a wonderful manner. Tout le Mond finished well and so did Miladi, while Might ran a very creditable race. Cricket Bat never looked likely. It looks as if the tracks here were a bit hard for him. Good Picking. Only six started in the open sprint, and the public picked thepi the right way. They ran bunched to the straight, the lenders being Pomp, Good Hunting, and Lordly Knight. Once in line Lordly Knight and Bayacre drew clear, and in a keen struggle Bnyacre just wore down his consistent rival. Assemble finished on for third money, with Normandy fourth and Pomp and Good Hunting beaten off. Bayacre is in good form at the pre-

sent time, and wherever he races in the future will do well. Assemble was running on well at the finish. Form Runs True. Cottesmore showed what a good galloper he is by improving with his first day’s race to win the hack sprint very handsomely, He was In or near the front throughout with Mobile, Heather Glow, Granado, and Bay Area also showing up, the field being closely bunched. Once in line,Cottesmore and Mobile came on best of the leaders and Peschiera put in a run on the inner. He beat Mobile, but had no prospect of reaching Cottesmore, who won decisively, Shining Gold was fourth, followed by Bonnie Vale, and the bunch was headed by Heather Glow and Granado. Cottesmore is really good, but hitherto his owner has not had the good fortune to have him sound for any period. Peschiera ran a good race and so did Mobile, who hung on well after showing brilliance early. Ho was one of the best hacks nt the meeting. G. Swalnson. The telegraph office closes at 5 p.m. The course is in good order, with a splendid sole of grass, and is not too hard. The long straight always appeals to owners, who like their horses to have every chance, and the club is hopeful of a liberal response in the way of nominations. MANAWATU REHANDICAP By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston North, March 18. Richfield has been rehandieapped to 7.8 for the Prince of Wales Handicap at the Manawatu Racing Club’s meeting. In the Johnston Memorial Handicap Baracre has been made 8.11 arid in the Te Matai Hack Handicap Senegal is 8-9.

OHINEMURI RACES Chief Event to Eager Rose WIN FOR D’ARTAGNAN Another Large Dividend Dominion Special Service. Paeroa, March 18The Oliiuemuri Jockey Club’s meeting was successfully concluded to-day, when the feature of the racing was the sensational win of Creina’s King in tnt steeplechase. The weather was fine, and there was a large attendance. The course was in excellent condition. The totalisator investments for the meeting were £38,(06, an increase over last year of £7109. Jumping with more confidence than on the first day, Free Air scored her first success as a jumper in the Second Handicap Hurdles, for which she was a good third choice to Emancipation and Imperial Prince. Free Air followed Unoco ami Imperial Prince into the straight, and stayed on too well at the end for Ifnpetial Prince, who was never given a mo ' ment’s peace through the race, Unoco ran another honest race, and Emancipation impressed by running on strongly from a long, way back. Emancipation stays well, and should win a good race before the season is over, D’Artagnan’s WliL D’Artagnan’confirmed his Te Bapa victory by scoring cleverly in the W aitekauri Handicap. He was behind Gleromney, Rereatu, and Impasto enterin„ the straight, but finished on strongly on the outside to win by a neck from Queen Nona, who came through on the rails and beat Impasto by a similar margin. Cherry King finished fast on the rails- to get fourth, and should come into his own later in the season. D’Artagnan is a very resolute finisher, and is a splendidlybred colt, who should eventually develop into a really good horse. Two outsiders, Ornamental and Holly Lu, finished first and second in the Hikutaia Hack Cup, and the winner paid a double-figure dividend on the win machine. Holly Lu and King Win made the running into the straight from Lady Lulu, Landlubber, and Delrain. Then Ornamental commenced a fast run on the rails, and she came on in great style to win going away from Holly Lu. Grand Talk was a close third, and Desert Stor was fourth, ahead of Lady Lulu and King Win. Ornamental is a well-bred filly who stays on solidly, and she deserved her victory, athough she was lucky to get through on the rails.

Easy for Eager Rose. Eager Rose made practically a onehorse race of the Shaw Handicap. She got to the front quickly, and gave nothing a chance, to win easily from Sunny S»y> who did not get a good run and was set back lust when attempting to go up on the rails half a mile from home. Prolyxo ran a creditable race for third, but the others were well beaten. Iluri was a good favourite for the Waihi Handicap, and he realised expectations by winning handsomely. Ruti was behind British Columbia, Gay Broncy, Last Lap, Great Britain and Beryl Latour when the field had settled down, but ran up second at the turn, and then "’ent on to score easily from Dark Marb.c, who finished on and beat Gay Broney for second. Ruri is a full-brother to Subdivision and is a smart hack over short courses. Greek Gold’s Victory. The Paeroa Handicap was easily won by Greek Gold, who made short work of the opposition at the finish. Greek Gold followed Welcome Lu and Hampton Park early, and won going away from Hampton Park, who hung on fairly well at the finish. Lord Vai battled on to got third, and Chief Cook was fourth. Greek Gold was unlucky on the first day, but on this occasion he received a great run, and scored handsomely. Chief Cook showed a bit of dash entering the straight, and should be much improved for his racing at the meeting. Big Surprise. There was a sensational surprise in the Hauraki Plains Steeplechase, when Creina’s King, who was supported to the extent of only £l3 on the win machine, won and returned a dividend of over three score, as well as double figures on the place machine. Royal Reign and Mangu King made most of the running, and with three furlongs to go Royal Reign was in front, with Master Lu, Simeon, and Creina’s King moving up. Creina’s King challeged on the inside of Royal Reign at the last fence, and beat her home by three parts of a length. Simeon, also at a good price, wns third, and Master Lu was fourth. Creina’s King ran moderately on the first day, but this time he jumped with more confidence and finished on well. He saved a good deal of ground round the home turn, where Royal Reign went wide, and that played a part in his win.

~ Favourite First. Sea Ruler was favourite in a good betting race for the Waikino Handicap, and duly .scored. Limex led into the straight from Currajong, Lucy Rose/Jalldy Karo, and Sea Ruler. A furlong from home, Limex, Currajong, and Lucy Rose were practically abreast in front. Sea Ruler then challenged on the outside, and went on to win nicely from Alloy, who enme home fast to beat Baroscope by a nose. Baroscope also ran on at the end, but Currajong, Limex, and Lucy Rose all tired in the last half-furlong.
