“Over-the-Fence” Scheme

Many applications have been received by the Hutt County Council from farmers interested in the “over-the-fence” unemployment scheme. , Several, however, are in doubt as to its exact nature, and information has been supplied by the council explaining the position. , ... ■ The work, according to the council s statemnt, must be of a developmental nature, such as draining, stumping, gorse cutting, or that which will improve the production of the land. Men employed must work for six days a week and will be paid by the county council the amount which they would receive each week under the ordinary No. 5 scheme. The ratepayer must supplement the man’s pay by a sum of about W-■ a week and arrange for insurance with the county clerk. The county council pavs the man the No. 5 scheme money alloted each week and the farmer pays 15/- a week in addition. A man entitled to 3| days a week at 10/- will work six days for the farmer and will be paid by the county council on behalf of the Unemployment Board £l/17/6, and will also get 15/-. Farmers may obtain application forms from the county clerk.
