BEACH PATROLMEN
Loss of Amateur Status
Efforts to induce the International Federation to relax its new regulation by which a man becoming a beach patrol loses his amateur status, have not been abandoned by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, Mr. Fred. G. Dunn, treasurer to the New Zealand Council, told a Christchurch “Sun” reporter, commenting on the opposition to the regulation expressed by the Royal Life Saving Society, London, in a letter to tffie Canterbury Centre of the R.L.S.S.
Mr. Duun, however, expressed the opinion that there was small prospect of the International, Federation altering its rule/ “We sympathise with fihe beach patrolmen, but we are under the control of the International Federation,” he said. “We have submitted a case to the federation, and that case is still tdie subject of negotiation. It has been taken up very strongly. Australia also made representations. Australia’s case has been replied to, but the federation has not yet replied to ours.” Mr. Dunn pointed out that) the federation was the head body of swimming in the world. As a member, of the federation, the New Zealand association had to give effect to its rules. Otherwise, the association’s swimmers would not be eligible to compete overseas. ■ ■
“This case is an example of a rule which suits the bigger countries, but does not fit the needs of small countries. It Is a question of which shall be paramount. The Dominion is not in a position to pay for beach patrols.”
