EXQUISITE DRESSES

Mr. and Mrs. Martin Harvey

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT

Last night at the Town Hall, Wellington people received with keen interest the wonderfully instructive and musical programme of living music presented by Mr. and Mrs. Martin Harvey and the Symphony Orchestra.

Black drapes formed an artistic background for the many lovely dresses worn, and a graded row 4 of dwarf pines in squat green tubs formed the only stage decoration. Mrs. Martin Harvey appeared first in a soft grey ninon Grecian tunic with flowing scarf and wreath, and next in a smoke grey and mauve draped Grecian robe, a powder blue ninon classic tunic with flowing white ninon scarf, and wreath of blue roses in hair. In. her dainty “bubble” dance she was in a gold classic tunic with long white shimmering “bubble.” For the Stars and Stripes skipping dance she wore an accordion-pleated skirt, a grass green laced bodice and puffed sleeves with big beige straw hat. In the “Tales from the Vienna Woods” (improvised waltz) she wore the same little frock.

Mr.. Martin Harvey wore some original and striking costumes. His first appearance, in “Marche Militaire,” was made in a scarlet georgette draped tunic oyer silver brocade and a wide red

scarf. In Bach’s lovely air on G String,. “Two Spirits Fraught With Love’s Humility," he wore a green and. silver brocaded silk tunic. His next tunic was of powder blue, and for, .“Marche Funebre” he chose a long, heavy blue shroud. • ■ < , In the- Tschaikowsky “Nutcracker Suite,” Mr. Harvey chose a red, yellow, and brown Arab costume in Danse Arabe, with scarlet sash and startlifig peacock green headpiece, and in the immensely comic Danse ChinoLs his coolie suit of white satin was set off by a cerise fan. “Valse des Fleurs,” the final movement, showed him wearing a silk drapery affair in gold and red over his pale blue tunic. The inspiring “Marsellalse,” by Rouget de Lisle, was wonderfully interpreted, and Mr. Martin Harvey wore a blue tunic with scarlet sash crossed from shoulder to waist. His “Hiking dance, a delicious burlesque, was dressed appropriately with dark green shorts, green shirt, and dark brown beret and haversack.

The pianoforte accompaniments were most ably played by Madame de Manny, who wore a frock of black mariette and crystal trimmings.
