QUINNAT SALMON

Catches in Canterbury

A perfect specimen of quinnat salmon, weighing 33 pounds, and 3ft. Sin. In length, was caught in the Rakaia River on a spoon bait by Mr. E. Rich gen, of Greendale. The fish took 35 minutes to land and fought strongly in the heavy water of the main stream after it had been struck, but after it had been worked in a back water it was gaffed without much difficulty. Shortly afterward Mr. Ridgen struck the mate of the fish he had landed, and for 25 minutes endeavoured to land it. The fish fought quite as strongly as the previous one, and after it had got into very fast water it ran out all his line and broke clear. The catch was the biggest of which he knew for this season, said Mr. Ridgen, although there had been odd ones caught in other’seasons weighing up to 35 pounds. The Rakaia was at present in perfect order for fishing, and all the other rivers were equally good, it being the. first time that they had been clear for over a month. Another quinnat salmon, weighing 311 b, was caught in the Waimakariri River, off Dunn’s bank, by Mr. R. Heese last week. The salmon put up a long fight, twice almost running out the angler’s line. Mr. Heese used a No. 5 Colorado spoon. The fish. 3ft. 6in. long, was in splendid condition. One of the biggest catches of quinnat salmon ever known in the Ashburton River was obtained recently, when three anglers bagged 11 fish in two days. The successful fishermen were Messrs. R. G. Shearman (six fish)., A. Cates (four fish), and J. B. Nicoll (one fish). (
