CITY COUNCIL MEETS
Last Evening’s Decisions The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, and Councillors J. Burns, J. McDonald, C. H. Chapman, R. Semple, W. Dunean, W. A. Appleton, J. N. Wallace, H. A. Huggins, T Forsyth, F. Meadowcroft. J. McEldowney, S. Hohn, W. J. Gaudin, and W. H. Bennett were present at the monthly meeting of the City Council held last evening. * * * Authority was granted for patent earthquake-resisting chimneys designed by Mr. F. N. Thompson to be used m Wellington and the necessary dispensations granted from full compliance with the existing by-laws,. subject to the chimneys complying with all conditions laid down by the city engineer. Approval was given for the erection of a block of fiats at the corner of Brougham and Majoribanks Streets, subject to certain conditions as to air space and setting back to a new alignment A 10ft. splay is to be made along both streets.
An Application from the headmaster for the free use of the Thorndon Baths was granted to parties of school children from the Johnsonville School when under the control of a .teacher. * An annual charge of £44/16/6 is to be made to the Fire Board for water supplied for domestic purposes to all fire brigade stations, except the Constable Street station, which is metered. The charge is to be made annually until all stations are metered. A sum of £1659 is to be placed on next year’s estimates for alterations to buildings and street works in connection with John Street widening. • ■ ♦ • Authority was granted for the construction of a'new road from the Karori Cemetery to Standen Street, provided <ie council undertakes additional relief works for the unemployed. The extension of Jubilee Road as a relief work for the unemployed is to be proceeded with. * The charge for the use of conveniences is to be reduced to Id. The Corporation horses are to be exhibited at the Wellington Easter Show upon the usual conditions. • • • » The Wellington Labour Representation Committee was granted permission to hold street meetings in connection with the coming municipal elections at places approved by the chief traffic inspector and subject to the approval of the Police Department. * * Permission was refused the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ Association to hold a street collection on a Friday. In view of the worthiness of the object for which the collection was to be made, the Mayor moved that permission be granted, but his motion lapsed . for want of a seconder.
Regarding the application of the Winter Show Association for the lease, of a further portion of the Town Belt, the Citv Council, led by the Mayor, signified objection to the proposal. Cr. J. N. Wallace said that perhaps the council might give the association the right to some control over the area subject to the public having the right to entrance, save at such times when there are entertainments or sports are being held. On Cr. Wallace moving in that direction it was defeated mi the voices.
