PERMIT WITHHELD

Drying of Skins at Silverstrcam MEDICAL OFFICER’S REPORT

An application for a permit to dry skins, an offensive trade, at the Amalgamated Brick Works factory at Silverstream was received from Lichtenstein and Paykel Ltd., at yesterday's meeting of the Hutt County Council- It was stated that the company had already begun operations, but in view of a.report from Dr. W. F. Findlay, officer of health, the council decided to withhold granting a permit until the company concerned had furnished an explanation. . In his report, Dr. Findlay said that he visited the premises a few days ago, and that such, as a result of the operations; were in rather a disgraceful state. He would suggest that it be made clear that a license be not granted until the premises were made tidy. “This firm commenced operations without a permit, and in this connection I would bring to notice that such might easily have resulted in unpleasant complications.” Dr. Findlay said. “Your council might even consider that the firm should be prosecuted for carrying on operations without a permit, it raises an important principle, in that promoters of offensive trades should not take the law into their own hands, and then perhaps claim hardship at a later date.”
