THE KING’S LIMNER

Vacancy in England . t

(Reuter —letter to “The Dominion.”) An interesting office still remains vacant,-that of "His Majesty’s Painter and Limner in Scotland.” The last holder of the office. Robert Gibb, R.S.A., died in 1931, at the age of 86. He will be remembered for ills battle pictures, “The Thin Red Line,” “Saving the Colours: the Guards at Inkerman,” and others. Since his death no move has been made to till the position, and it is thought that in view of present conditions the office may be left vacant for some time. “The King's Limner,” as it is usually called, is a. Scottish appointment, and is an honour somewhat similar to that of the Poet Laureate in England. It is of considerable antiquity, and .dates from before the union of the two countries in 1707. Raeburn was one of. the best known holders of tbe office.
