NAVY ENTERTAINS

Diomede Crew “At Home”

The naval base at Devonport on Wednesday afternoon presented an animated scene, when the ship’s company of H.M.S. Diomede gave an “at home” and children’s party for friends and relatives of the crew. There were over 1000 people present, and the guests were entertained by sports and sideshows, which included the thrills of the chute, aerial railway, and roundabout. The guests were met at the city side of the harbour by a "funny party” and the ship's band, who marshalled them to the waiting ferry, and they had already caught the festive spirit of the day when the ferry reached tlie dockyard. After their entertainment on the ship, sweets and ice-creams were distributed to the children, and the adults were guests at afternoon tea.

The young folk wore further amused by a picture show. In the evening a dance was given in the Harbour Board shed, 200 couples being present.
