HOLD-UP IN CONGRESS
Senator Long’s “Filibuster”
BUDGET BALANCING (Received Jan. 23, 7 p.m.). Washington, Jan. 22. Domestic affairs now before Congress are attracting much attention. Although Senator Long’s “filibuster” against the Glass Banking Bill has been broken by a compromise elimination of the branch banking clause, the debate is still continuing to hold up other legislation. To-day Senator Borali flatly insisted that the Budget could not be balanced without “reflation.” indicating a protracted fight between the eastern and western sections over inflation. Many westerners are favouring the remonetisation of silver and other means to raise commodity prices. Easterners generally are defending the gold standard. WELCOME MOISTURE U.S. Winter Wheat Crop (Received Jan. 22, 8.55 p.m.).
Chicago, Jan. 22. Heavy mists, light showers and fair rains were experienced last week over the greater part of Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Southern Colorado, the last section also getting good snows which will help the winter wheat crop, but more is needed further west and north.
