SAILING REGATTA

Yachts in Evans Bay

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

Interesting Racing Seen LAVINA BEATEN BY BETTY Evans Bay presented a gay appearance yesterday when its blue waters were studded with yachts large and small, on the occasion of the annual Wellington Anniversary Day regatta, controlled by the Wellington Provincial Yacht and MotorBoat Association. Bather a boisterous wind in the morning made sailing difficult, but in the afternoon, when the wind fell considerably, conditions were well-nigh perfect for keen sport.

One of the features ot the regatta, which excit'd considerable interest, was the presence of the two Sanders Cup boats. Betty and Lavina. In a straightout contest in the morning. Betty secured a decisive win from Lilvina. romping home from this year's representative with 2min. itisec. to spare. Betty got the best of the start, and maintained the lead throughout the whole of the race. Both boats competed in a general centreboards’ handicap in the afternoon, and although neither was placed. Betty beat Lavina to the post by 49 seconds. It was regrettable that only three keel yachts entered for the regatta. In past years, the large yachts have contributed much to the success of the event, but it is apparent that yachtsmen have abided by their recent decision, that they would not race unless a rule, that they would be liable to disqualification under certain conditions if they took visitors out. was struck out. Their absence was particularly regrettable.

Kotare secured a good win in the principal general centreboard handicap, and Advance and Scandal were placed second mid third respectively on corrected times. Betty and Lu vina could only secure sixth and eighth places respectively, but in this event they were competing against some boats witli much bigger sail area. Coleen won the general centreboard handicap for smaller boats, with Matti and Damfino second and third respectively. Coleen won the Idle Along class race, Noleen the Tuknpuna race, and Damfino the event for 13ft. and under class centreboards. The entries, and the standard of seamanship shown by the boys in their little Taurangn cruft, are especially worthy of commendation. Two races for these boats were held during.the day. _ Detailed results are as follow, handicaps. finishing and corrected times, being given where necessary : — KEELERS' GENERAL HANDICAP. .
