SEARCHER OVERDUE

Captain Hope’s Quest for Missing Hinkler ANXIETY AT LAUSANNE (By Telegraph.—-Pros* Assn.— Copyright.) (Received Jan. 20, 7.30 p.m.) Lausanne, Jan, 19. Anxiety is felt here for Captain Hope, who left at 11 o’clock in the morning to continue his search for SquadronLeader Hinkler. Captain Hope had only a flve-hours’ supply of petrol. There was no news of him at midnight. He set out as the result of receiving an anonymous London telegram stating that Mr. Hinkler wouldj be found at

the southern base of the Wetterhorn. He took the message seriously, though previous to starting he was warned of the danger of searching the Wetterhorn in the present weather. Yesterday Captain Hope again scoured the Rhone Valley in quest of the missing airman. A search of the Simplon proved fruitless. It is “stated on behalf or the London committee that now seven independent and reliable witnesses saw a machine similar to Mr. Hinkler’s flying southeast over the Rhone Valley on January 7. The committee is confident that the search can be narrowed to the Rhone Valley. LADY BAILEY SAFE Forced Landing in Desert DRIFTED EASTWARD (Received Jan. 20, 7.15 p.m.) London, Jan. 20. Lady Bailey has been found safe near Tahoua, in the Niger district. She was forced to land for lack of petrol, states a message from Algiers. The Paris correspondent of “The Times” says that Army airmen found Lady Bailey while camel scouts were still' scouring the desert, where she landed witli only an hour’s supply of petrol, 1450 miles from Oran. She had apparently drifted eastward 30 miles for every' 100 miles of headway.' She had the option of returning to find a landmark or continuing in the hope of reaching Niger before her petrol was exhausted.

Captain Barnard left London at dawn yesterday for Oran to participate in the search f6r Lady Bailey.
