FOR EASTERN TRADE
Sale of Veteran Moeraki
TOOK TROOPS TO SAMOA
The Union Company’s well-known old intercolonial passenger steamer Moeraki has been sold to Mr. H. C. Sleigh, of Sydney. The vessel is intended for trade in the East, and is expected to load a cargo of flour and general produce for Hong-Kong early next month.
Built by W. Denny and Bros., Dumbarton. in 1902, the Moeraki, a steel twin-screw vessel of 4421 tons gross, was for many years one of the erack trans-Tasman passenger steamers running between Sydney and Wellington and Auckland in conjunction with the Manuka. Later she was used as a relieving vessel in that run, and in 1929 took the place of the old A.U.S.N. steamer Suva in the Sydney-Fiji passenger run. In September. 1930. the service was discontinued because, of lack of business, the Karetu replacing the Moeraki and maintaining the cargo service only. The Moeraki was laid up at Sydney, where she has remained ever since. In August. 1914. the Moeraki took New Zealand troops to Samoa.
