RINKS PLAY

Six Already Qualify BOWLS TOURNAMENT McWhannell’s Fine Play WELLINGTON DOING WELL As a result of yesterday’s play in the rinks event of the New Zealand Bowling tournament, four rinks have already qualified with six wins or post-section play- Two are We ■ lington rinks (Gray and bm'th, Kclburn), and the others are Ken (Oneliunsa) Lancaster (Cailton). The most brilliant game of Ibe touririiiieut was the one between McWban uell (Hataital) aud Benefield' (Wauganui). The latter was leading lb—o with 11 heads to go. The Hataitai rink oerformed the phenomenal feat ot scoring on every one of the remaining beads, adding 21 points in all, and won by 2, one of the most sensational wins ever made in the New Zealand touruaThe games to-day will decide the fate of many rinks with only four wins, who must secure double wins to qualify. The weather has continued with glorious sunshine, aud bowlers have never baa anything better. It was the hottest day of the tournament. Notes on Play. There was naturally a. good deal of interest iu the doings of Maxwell Walker s rink from zlucklaud, as it woa the event last year. Yesterday morning he found Rendle (Bastbourne) as his opponem, and the Wellington quartet gave the visiting rink a taste of their fightim, quality. Somehow or other the Aucklanders are not quite on their game, de Launay being quite below par. It was a spectacular game to watch, and there was a good deal of driving, more on the part of Eastbourne. , x On the eighth head Johns had put the jack in the ditch with his bowl a foot away. Walker drew the shot right ou the brink with his first, and with his second drew closer still to the jack for two, Rendle failing to drive either out. Eastbourne were lying five on the twelfth bead. Walker cut one out, but Rendle put another in and scored five, all drawn shots. Walker then added three, but came on with two threes and a two, and led 19—14. On the eighteenth head Rendle trailed the jack through for a two. On the 23rd head Eastbourne were lying four. Walker drove one out. With his second he went into the head to hit the jack, which rebounded to the Eastbourne bowls. Had it gone into the ditch Walker would have had four. It was an uphill fight for the Auckland men, and Rendle’s team gave no quarter, winning iu the end 29—21. It was a bad setback for Walker, as he had a hard game before him for the afternoon against Naylor, Lyall Bay, . , , . , , T c The Australian rink skipped by L. b. Cummins ran up against one of the hardest Wellington rinks in Naylor (Lyall Bay) iu. the morning. Bcisley was not quite on bls best game. The Lyall Bay men kept steadily in front and inflicted the second defeat upon the visitors, who had to win all remaining games to qualify for post-section play. Walker ’(Barrington, Christchurch), who has much of the style of his brother Maxwell, took the lead against Brighting (Hataitai) at the start, his No. 3 drawing a beautiful shot when Brighting was lying four. Brighting got a five on the sixth head and drew level on the tenth. Crocker, Walker's number three, was playing a fine game. Ardeß was playing a shade better than his skip, and from the. midway stage the Hataitai team drew ahead to win comfortably. So far as can be ascertained, only one seven has yet been scored, and that was by Hollard's team on Saturday against Dimock (Wellington). Close Going.

R. J. Smith (Kelburn) continued his unbroken run of wins against Markham (Thorndon). and his first eight heads scored 2/5/3/1/3 against his opponents two twos and a single. Markman cante along.better after this, and closed Ute gap until he had a good chance of pulling off the game. The Kclburn men rallied at the finish, and won by two, making five wins for Smith. Noble-Adams (Blenheim) nearly created a “divai’shun” in Tom Gray’s camp from Kelburn. Gray had fottr wins, but Adams stayed with him to the end of the fifth round, and only went down by two. Gray also had five wins in with this game. “Jimmy” Nash, the popular Manawatu bowler, had au enjoyable game against Porteous, Wellington, iti which he did not make a single drive. Manawatu jumped away at the start, jmd though Porteous was getting on the mark, bis opponent was drawing beautifully, and several times finished up by taking off the shot bowl to hold it himself. Ho won by 27—11. Simmons. No. 2 for Nash, was one time a member of Victoria club. Gardner (Kclburn) made a breakaway at the start against Ives (Christchurch), who later scored 3,3, 2,1, 2, .1 in succession, and took the lead. Gardner tied with a five, but Ives again took command, and gained his fourth win. Higginbotham (Mt. Albert) had to practically carry on a single-handed fight against Tucker (Victoria), whose team were all on the head. The other three Aucklanders gave their skip little help, and Higginbotham, by brilliant and accurate drawing, several tinie.s ended by drawing the shot on a head with four and five against himi In the circumstances Higginbotham did well to go down only by 29—24. He was' the hardest-worked man on the green. • , ■ , < Dee’s team from Nelson indulged In some driving against Bendall (Napier), but the Hawke's Bay mau just kept on

drawing, and kept a steady iead Ml the way. Skipper Dee did most ot tnc ur*vinc. and be “dc’cd” hard . Mona Thompson’s Thorndon make a crowd of good fellows, but only moderate bowlers in the tournament. After doing so well in the centre tournament, and two of them winning five games in the pairs event, they seem to have packed up. laey have only had one win up to now. No .wonder Shepherd (Hataitai) has not done too well in the tourney. In eight games, five have beeu-played ou end rinks. . ,■> The defeat of Robertson (OnenuUe.i) by Foy (Hawera) to the tune of o9—lo, was a great surprise. . J. Kerr (Onehunga), with a full hand of wins, is likely to extend the best rinks when the post-section play begins, lie is a certainty for the later rounds. He is an ex-Thorndon, Newtown, and labiatua player, and popular among bowlers everywhere. He has a very strong rink,

Dour Scottish Fight.

A bard game was yet in store tor Benefield, although he started off m a manner which appeared to have made it a certainty for his rink. He had to meet MeWhanncll (Hataitai) on the Wellington lower green. In each ot the first four beads the head was- killed and had to be replayed, aud Benefield had the better of the exchanges, and scored u—-1. If he played a running shot the results were generally in his favour, aud , the Hataitai players could do nothing right. When the store stood at IS—3 ou the ,13th head, McWhannell’s prospects of staying in had gone to zero. But the dour qualities of the Scotsman came to light, and he began to fight for every inch of the way. At the 15th head he put a stranglehold on Benefield’s rink, andfrom then on until the 23rd head Benefield did not score a point, and McWhannell’s men, playing for their lives, made an amazing recovery, and with two beads to go were only one down. In the last two heads MeWhanncll continued the long run. and made the record of the tournament of scoring on eleven heads in succession as follow: 3,3, 1,1, 2.1, 1,2, 2,1, making .17 points in all. to win. Benefield scored a single on the 15th head, and never scored again. McWhannell gaining a thrilling vivforv by four points, the score being 25—21. Good Christchurch Team.

Dr. Mark’s team from Christchurch is one that is going to figure strongly iu the post-section play. The driving Skogluud, from Stratford, failed to put them off their steady drawing, and the morning game was a comfortable win. In the afternoon the Christchurch team had a clear win against Routley (Levin), taking command at the 17th head. O’Donnell’s Wellington rink lost in the morning to Fielding (Hataitai), who was playing too good bowls to. lose, and bad the upper hand in the closing stages. In the afternoon Fielding beat Bedell (Island Bay) by only two points, and O’Donnell won on the last head against Hincheliff (Caledonian). In the same section as McWhannell (Section A), Wilson (Linwood) gained a win by one point after a neck and neckfight with White (Blastings), and bad five wins out of six. Kerr (Onehunga) was unbeatable against Shepherd (Hataitai), and won in a cauter by 41- —13. This was Iverr s sixth successive win, and he is a certainty for post-section play. , In the afternoon Maxwell Walkers team bad their backs to the wall when meeting Naylor, Lyall Bay. The interval seemed to have had h beneficial effect, and a]?o the change of rink, for de Launay improved considerably, ana Auckland won 33-21. H Walk.er wins two games to-day he will qualify for post-section play. Results of Play The results of the day's play are as follow FIFTH ROUND (WELLINGTON LOWER). The following is the summary of wins and losses to date:— SECTION A.

Prospects for To-day There are four rinks with six wins, and certain of qualifying for post-section pluy. They are Kerr (Onehunga), Smith (Kelburn), Gray (Kclburn), and Lancaster (Carlton, Auckland), aud it is quite possible, having regard to their opponents to-day, that they will come through section play with seven wins if not. eight. As six wins qualify for post-section play, the greater interest is in the rinks which have only four or five wins, and must secure at least one -win to-day to qualify. A lower number of wins in a section can only qualify if it is the highest number of wins in the section. The following indicates the games and the players;— SECTION A. Wilson (Linwood), with five wins, has to meet Bull (Levin) and Smart (New Plymouth). Bcuefield (Wanganui), four wins, plays Lawrie (Lyall Bay) and Conder (Island Bay). McWhannell (Hataitai) plays White (Hastings) and Conder (Island Bay). Lawrie (Lyall Bay) plays Benefield (Wanganui) and Lambert (Thorndon). Smart (New Plymouth) plays Harper (Otahubu) and Wilson (Linwood). SECTION B. Kerr (Onehunga) has six wins, and plays Hain (Victoria) and McKenzie (Opawq); Hutchison (Dunedin) plays Bary (Palmerston North) and Hain (Victoria); Reid (Lyall Bay) plays Shepherd (Hataitai) and Hughan (Carterton). ■ SECTION C. Marks (Christchurch), with five wins, plays Hincheliff (Caledonian) and Bedell (Island Bay); Fielding (Hataitai) plays Noad (Lyall Bay) and Tongue (Auckland); O’Donnell (Wellington), with four wins, plays Skoglund (Stratford) and Lomas (Kelburn). SECTION D. Ives (Christchurch), with five wins, has to play Gilbert (Seatoun) and Lowry (Petone); Arnott (Palmerston North) meets Tucker (Victoria) and Dee (Nelson). Dee also plays Warwick (Newtown), Lowry (Petone), Ives and Gardner (Kelburn). In Section E, Rendle meets Cumming (Sydney) and Martin (Hataitai); Maxwell Walker (Auckland) meets Bringans (Khandallah) and Nancarrow (Thorndon); Naylor (Lyall Bay) plays Nancarrow and Turpin (Canterbury). Cumming (Australia) has to play Rendle and McComish (Maitai). SECTION F. Smith (Kelburn), with six wins, plays Trayes (Auckland) and Piper (Maitai); Trayes (Auckland), with five wins, has to meet Smith and J. Nash (Palmerston North), while Nash plays Glen (Island Bay) and Trayes. SECTION G. Holland (Putaruru), with five wins, plays Pollock (Newtown) and Whiting (Lower Hutt); Jenkin (Carlton) plays Dimock (Wellington) and Jones (Seatoun); Edwards (Temuka) plays Harris (Wanganui) and Hollard; Wilson (Linwood) plays Whiting and Cooper (Karori). SECTION H. Lancaster (Auckland) plays Smith (Thorndon) and Currie (Timaru) ; Bolton (Victoria) plays Currie' and Reid (Lyall Bay); Christiansen (Palmerston North) meets Doherty (Kelburn) and Kobertson (Petone). SECTION I. Efford (Christchurch) plays liyan (Lyall Bay) and Bremner (West End); Priddle (Island Bay) plays Bremner and Collett (Waimate); Gordon (Wanganui) plays Nalder (Khandallah) and Squire (Hawera). SECTION J. Gray (Kelburn), with six wins, plays Mayo (Port Ahuriri), four wins, and Foy (Hawera); Gilbert (Karori) plays Kobertson (Onehunga) and Baker (Hutt); Mayo play® Gray and London (Wanganui). Possibilities. McWhannell (Hataitai), ou the magnificent win he brought off yesterday afternoon, showed himself a back to the wall fighter, with a good steady team which does not get rattled. Reid’s Lyall Bay team is a good one, and should put up a stout fight to-day. Izawrie (Lyall Bay) has to get two wins, and has two hard games on his hands. O’Donnell (Wellington) should not find it impossible to qualify with his two games to-day, and Fielding (Hataitai) will have to be in bad form to lose both his games. Cumming (Australia) has two fighting rinks to meet to-day, and will need to be in good form if he is to qualify. Naylor (Lyall Bay), who went down to Maxwell Walker, should get through, although Nancarrow’s rink has the knack of springing surprises, as it did when it defeated Rendle. Rendle should win one of the two remaining games to qualify. Trayes (Auckland) has two hard games on his hands, both of which are fighting hard. Jenkin (Carlton) should be able to secure tho two wins he needs. Bolton (Victoria) will ba able to give nothing away to win against Currie (Timaru). Efford (Christchurch) should get his other necessary win to-day. Gilbert (Karori) has a fair chance of reaching post-section play, but will find Robertson (Onehunga) a hard proposition. Mayo (Port Ahuriri) will find it bard to qualify when he must beat Gray (Kclburn) and London (Wanganui). Game for Executive The members of the executive of the New Zealand Bowling' Council' present in 'Wellington, went to the Hutt green yesterday and played a short game of 17 heads. The brief break from executive duties was much enjoyed, the honours going to the South Island as follows: — 11. B. Oakey (Christchurch), A. P. King (Christchurch), W. Counor (Dunedin). and IT. Rowley (Dunedin), 17,. S. Sf. Stone, J. Kershaw. M. J. Hodgins, and 11. G. Mayer (Wellington), 14.
