FOR THE ANTARCTIC

Admiral R. E. Byrd’s Second Expedition SUPPLY ARRANGEMENTS Dominion Special Service. Dunedin, Jan. 6. It has been definitely decided that the Byrd Antarctic Expedition No. 2 will leave the United States about the latter part of September, 1933, and will make its base, as on the previous occasion, at Dunedin. Word to this effect has been received by Messrs. H. L. Tapley and Company from the expedition supply officer, Mr. V. H. Czegka. The covering letter received states that among the larger items which the expedition has in mind to ship ahead to Dunedin will be 500 tons of coal (unless other and more satisfactory arrangements can be made to have this amount available in New Zealand, one or two aeroplanes with accessories, approximately 15,000 gallons of gasoline, about 40 tons of food, from 30 to 50 tons of dog food, and about 50 tons of other supplies. A ship has been purchased for the expedition. This is the Bear of Oakland, of approximately 200 ft. length, 30ft. beam, and 17ft. draught, with a displacement tonnage of 1200. She is a wooden vessel.
