FOR AMERICA Pillow Fight Booked TEA TRADER ALSO Speedmint to Go to Sydney NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.”) Pillow Fight is due to leave for America on the Monterey in a fortnight hence, hie raced disappointingly at Ellerslie; but his form in the Derby and Clifford Plate was not altogether surprising, as his preparation was hardly a solid one; the anxiety caused through his leg injury being a factor which prevented him being thoroughly tuned up. Pillow Fight has capabilities, and when more physically lit will give a better account of himself, Pillow Fight will make the trip in charge of his trainer. C. Morse. Speedmint for Sydney. Present intentions are to nominate Speedmint for the Sydney Cup, and if all goes well she will make the trip. Speedmint has numerous seconds to her credit, this season, including the King Edward) Memorial and A.K.G. Handicap, over one anile and a half journeys, while her fifth in the Auckland Cup, after being one of the last to enter the straight, suggests that her capabilities as a stayer cannot be overlooked. Tea Trader for United States. During’the Ellerslie meeting Mr. D. J. Davis, owner of Pillow Fight, asked Mr. R. T, Reid to put a price On Tea Trader. Negotiations have been completed, and when Pillow Fight leaves for America he will be accompanied by Tea Trader. The latter is a very brilliant sprinter, and at the eup meeting was second in the Railway Handicap, third Ju the King's Plate, and won the Newmarket Handicap. Eastwood for Foxton. A. Eastwood returned home from Auckland during the week. His injured foot is all right again, and the popular Riccarton lightweight will return here next week and ride at Foxton. Trentham Tracks. ' Racing tracks during the holidays W.ere hard and fast, and quite a number of horses were sore by the time the fixtures concluded. During the dry spell the Trentham track has been watered daily with 70,900 gallons, and so long as it requires watering it will be done in view of;the forthcoming meeting. At the present time the course has a fine sole of grass of from four to five inches, and it will be in first-class order for the racing this month. New Zealand Colt Wins.

Mi'.W. R. Keinball’s two-year-old Staghorn, who recently ran away- with his first race in Melbourne, started a warm favourite for the Juvenile Stakes at Caulfield on Boxing Day. After making a bold showing he was beaten iuto third place. It is reported that he had had an easy time between races, so he should improve. The race was won by the Tea Tray colt Burra Khana, who is out of Refinement, and runs in the colours of Mr. F. Smithden. Burra Khana was bred at Elderslie, and was purchased by (J. Price ou behalf of his owner at the last Trentham sales for 400 guineas.

Holly Hohn Destroyed. The Frankton owner-trainer, M. J. Carroll, won three races with his two horses, Paganelli and Holly Holm, at the Manawatu and Stratford meetings, but the trip was not a very profitable one. He arrived home with only Paganelli. Holly Holm broke a fetlock during the running of the Tariki Handicap at Stratford and had to be destroyed. The mishap occurred only about a furlong from the finish when Holly Holm was going well, with good prospects of success. He collapsed suddenly a short distance from home, and it was later discovered that he had broken a fetlock. Another New Zealand Line.

A two-year-old of great promise, with an interest for New Zealanders, was discovered during the holiday racing in Sydney. Wexford unexpectedly won the Nursery Handicap on the first day of the Australian Jockey Club’s meeting, while on the second day he scored in the rich December Stakes. He is by Saltash, his dam, Kilkenny Lass, a sister to Mdtley and Lysander, by Absurd from Pennon, by Coriander from Mr. G. M. Currie's great brood mare, Eulogy. Wexford had not won previously, but he is a wellgrown, stylish-looking colt, for whom big things are now being predicted. Princess Doreen Off Colour.

The disappointing performance of Princess Doreen in the A.R.C.-Royal Stakes at Ellerslie, on Tuesday/ whim she was badly beaten out of a place, was-difficult to account forat the time,.and her trainer, L. Wilson, was distinctly puzzled. The filly was blowing badly when she came back to the saddling paddock, and also after being taken home she gave indications that she was not herself. Her trainer called in-Dr. C. Ring, veterinary surgeon, who examined the filly and advised leaving.her at Ellerslie for a day or so before returning south. On Thursday morning she appeared to be a lot better, and .L.-Wilson decided to rail her home to Awapuni. She has been left in the Wellington Stakes, but it all depends on her progress in the interval as to whether she will content that event. Joins Cameron’s Team.

The Hunting Song three-year-old Grand Sport will in future be trained by J. M. Cameron at Hastings. This hack only started once at the Auckland meeting, running unplaced in the County Handicap. He. drew No. 1 at the barrier, but got chopped out at the start, and afterward met with a lot of trouble. As the result he was cut about rather badly, and will need a'short spell. Grand Sport put up several fast gallops before the meeting, and more is likely to be heard of him before the present season is over. Starsliooter Finished.

Starshooter was galloped on so badly during the running of the Wyndham Cup that he will not race again. He' is an aged son of Archery from Stardancer, and in his heyday was very useful. Cricket Bat.

Cricket Bat was well tried out at the Auckland meeting, but he Was a disappointment. He showed speed, but he weakened at the finish of each raee. He is an exceptionally brilliant galloper who has registered many fine performances in his training work at Riecarton this season, while his track efforts at Ellerslie gained him hosts of admirers. If he would show his best he could win in any company, and though seven furlongs or a mile is popularly believed to be his favourite journey, he is capable of going further.

In a Bad Way. Teller was in a bad way after the Pre-

lident’s Handicap at Hastings'on Monlay, and he, too, can be ruled out of all immediate engagements, even if it is not found necessary to destroy him. It is feared that one of his fetlocks has gone past recovery. Advance Camp Sold. The Te Rapa jumper, Advance Camp, has been sold at a satisfactory figure by Mr. G. P. Buckenham to the well-known Canterbury trotting owner, E. C. McDermott, for use, it is understood, as a hunter by a son of another prominent southern trotting man, W. J. Tomkinson. Advance Camp has several races over hurdles (j his credit, including the New Year’s Hurdles at the Ellerslie summer meeting last season. He went south with the returning Ricearton contingent this week. Injured an Eye. Red Sun, who was successful in winning the Auckland Racing Club Handicap ou January 2 has returned to Trendham. When he was brought back to the ■paddock after contesting the Grandstand ‘Handicap on Tuesday, Red Sun was suffering from an injury to one of bis eyes. As the horse seemed to be suffering acute ‘pain Dr. IV. 0. Ring was culled in aud he attended to the injury. To Ride At Rcefton. L. Faulkner, who is apprenticed to R. Hatch at Awapuni, will be riding at the Reefton meeting on Monday and Tuesday. He is under engagement to AV. Stewart, of Kumara, whose team includes Mataa and Arrowmid. Faulkner is also likely to ride Giggleswick-and Animated. He is a native of the West Coast, having been born at Kumara. Sanguine King. Sanguine King is still suffering from injuries received in the Lake Hack Handicap at Levin, and it will be some considerable time before he is ready to go into the stable again. TROTTING NOTES The Gold Cup Meeting CLASS WELL REPRESENTED (By “Overcheck.”) The nominations received by the Wellington Trotting Club for its meeting on Saturday next must be regarded as quite satisfactory. While they are not large from ft numerical point of view, the general standard of the horses engaged is probably higher than at any earlier meetIn the New Zealand Gold Cup itself eleven of the highest-class pacers in commission have been nominated, including Harold Logan and Koi I’Or, the two best pacers in the Dominion at the present time. Gold Country’s presence in the field also adds interest to the event as this horse has been racing brilliantly in the south, and there are those who consider that he has not yet reached the zenith of his powers. Garner, who raced with marked ability at Auckland, is nominated for the unhoppled trotters’ races, while Fairyland, who won at Addington recently, is also engaged. ... Among the pacers in the minor events, such names at Little Guy, Wilma Dillon, Sunny Morn, Baron Bingen, Tactless, College Boy, Raydus, and the improved Brent Zoloch attract attention. Acceptances close on January 10, and in accordance with my usual practice 1 shall next week publish a brief review of. the form of the horses engaged at the meeting, which gives promise ot being a most interesting one. Great Northern Derby.

Apropos of the Great Northern Derby a southern writer states; —

Why Taxpayer set th? slow pace of 2.22 for the first mile in the Great Northern Derby is hard to understand, but it must be obvious to everyone that it was the best way the race could have been run for Indianapolis, who had done no work but jogging since he left Addington. Had a solid pace been set from the start Indianapolis may have been cracked up. When it came to a half-mile sprint he had too much speed for Taxpayer and Golden Direct. Mr. G. J. Barton paid a big price for Indianapolis on the advice of his trainer, W. J. It is now a matter of history how he started a lame horse and avenged his New Zealand Derby defeat. Mr. J. R. McKenzie was the first to congratulate Mr. Barton oil his success, and in a telegram to W. J. Tomkinson, who was not well enough to make the trip north to drive the colt, stated that he was sorry the trainer could not be present. Indianapolis was driven by E. C- McDermott, and the win marked Mr. G. J. Barton’s second success in the Great Northern Derby, Tempest winning for him last year.

Edith Voyage. Edith Voyage, who is engaged at \\ ellington, ran a good race in the Progressive Handicap at Addington, and the outing should do her good as she had not raced for some time. She is in R. Townley's stable and is therefore in very capable hands.

Caution Given. An inquiry was held after the Au Revoir Handicap at Addington on Monday, and after evidence was taken 1. H. Newton, driver of Pageant d’Or, was cautioned for flourishing his whip near the finish of the race.

An Escapade. . Silver de Oro recently bolted with her sulky and after careering round pulled up at a wire fence. She cut her legs but fortunately the injuries were of a minor nature only.

On Injured List. . Eureka Boy recently met with a mishap which necessitated his withdrawal from his engagements at Addington. As a result of the accident he fell and damaged his knees considerably.

Railway Service to Trots. In order to eater for the large attendance expected at Hutt Park on Saturday, the Railway Department has made arrangements for a fast and frequent train service to run direct to. the course. A popular fare has been provided for the occasion and it is expected that racegoers will avail themselves of the opportunity of using such a cheap and convenient means of transport to the course.
