FIRE BOARD SECRETARY Appointment of Mr. H. Firth Following the resignation of Mr. W. F. Sturmau, who has been appointed town clerk of Invercargill, the Petone Fire Board yesterday unanimously appointed Mr. H. Firth, acting-town clerk of Petone, to the position of secretary to the board. As the arrangement stands at present the Petone Borough Council allows its town clerk and the office staff to carry out the board’s clerical work for a stipulated payment, aud in this connection a report of Mr. G. J. J. B’eil, an accountant, on the value of the services was discussed. The board is at present paying the council £4O per annum, and Mr. Feil assessed the value at £55. The chairman, Mr. D. McKenzie, thought that it was not out of the board’s way to pay the extra £l5. Mr. Sturman explained that the board was paying the money to the council and not directly to the officers concerned. Several members expressed the opinion that £4O was sufficient for the amount of work involved, and the board decided to continue the present payment. TRIBUTE TO MR. STURMAN "He has been a faithful servant and has carried out his work well,” said the chairman of the Petone Fire Board, Mr. D. McKenzie, in accepting with regret the resignation of the secretary, Mr. W. F. Sturman, who has been appointed town clerk of Invercargill.
