YARDS TO CLOSE
Building of Ships . OLD AUCKLAND FIRM Founded in Year 1842 Dominion Special Service. Auckland, Nov. 13. Slackness of trade and idleness of shipping are responsible for the closing of the well-known Auckland shipbuilding yards owned by Mr. George T. Niccol. The Fanshawe Street business was founded by Mr. Niccol’s father, the late Henry Niccol, in 1842, two years after hoisting of the British flag at Auckland, and is the oldest shipbuilding establishment in New Zealand,
At one time the Niccol yards were the largest shipbuilding yards in the Dominion. Hundreds of vessels from cutters and yachts to cargo and passenger steamers plying In coastal and Intercolonial trade have been built by the firm during the 90 years it has been in existence. Many fine schooners built in these yards are now in Australia and various parts of the Pacific, and some of the small coastal steamers are still trading in the North and South Island waters..
When the shipbuilding trade was at its height the firm had two yards.
