Kaiser Wilhelm’s Hope

(From “The Dominion,” Nor. 14, 1907.) A state banquet in honour of the visit of the Kaiser and Kaiserin was held at St. George’s Hall (London). The Kaiser spoke as follows:—Many dear memories of bygone days link me to the English Royal family. I earnestly hope that the close relationship of the two families will be reflected in the relations of the two countries, thus confirming the peace of the world, which it is the constant endeavour of his Majesty King Edward and myself to preserve. * * •» The prevalence of furious motoring on that portion of the Hutt Road within the Onslow borough was referred to at the meeting of the local council last night, and it was resolved on the motion of Cr. Plimmer that the attention of the police authorities be again directed to the matter. * » » The city engineer (Mr. W. H. Morton) informed a “Dominion” representative yesterday afternoon that it was his intention to get on with the regrading and improvement of Woodward Street right away. This street is historical as it is the old bed of the Kumutoto stream, which used to flow out of the gully that lies between the Wellington Terrace and the hills of Kelburne at the point now occupied by the Wellington Club. * * • Professor Biles, professor of naval architecture at the Glasgow University, and vice-president of the Institute of Naval Architects, who arrived in Sydney the other day, thinks that though an Australian navy would be an absolute necessity in the near future, the construction of a navy in Australia would at present be a matter of very great difficulty, as no class of shipbuilding required such skill and experience as the building of torpedoboat destroyers. * * • A public meeting of the ratepayers of the Miramar borough is to be held at the Kiosk, Worser Bay, on Wednesday next, November 20, to consider the proposal to raise a special loan of £71,000 for water supply, drainage, and street improvements.
