Gathering at Island Bay

Recently a pleasant gathering was held in the Masonic Hall, Island Bay, the occasion being a public farewell to i Miss C. E. A. Acheson, who is retiring from the teaching profession after hav T ■ ing been infant mistress at the local school for a period of 16 years. Among those on the platform were Mr. T. Forsyth, chairman of the Education Board; Mr. Edie, chairman of ; the Headmasters’ Association; Mr. Grant, chairman of the Wellington Division of the Red Cross; Mr. N. A. Ingram, secretary Educational Federation; Mr. O. J. Howarth, headmaster Island Bay School; Mr. E. J.' Smith, chairman of the Island Bay Home and School Association; Mr. C. B. McDougall, chairman of the Island Bay School Committee,....together-with ..inembers., of the School Committee, Home and School Association, and staff of the school. A delightful programme was presented by Mr. Ken McAuley, Miss E. Parsons, Mr. Roy Dellow, Miss Gunn, Mr. Mayall, and Mr. Hall. The school committee presented Miss Acheson with a leather-bound portfolio, which included an illuminated address, together with an enlarged photo, of the children and staff. The staff presented a travelling case and hatbox, while the parents, co-operating with the Home and School Association and the old scholars, presented a gold wristlet watch. Miss Acheson thanked all those responsible for the gifts. Her teaching life had been a very happy one, she said. She loved her work and it never became dull or monotonous.
