SURF SEASON OPENS
Lyall Bay Club TWENTY-FOURTH YEAR There was a large attendance, including a number of visitors from city surf clubs, at the official opening of the Lyall Bay Surf and Life-Saving Club's twentyfourth season at the club-house on Saturdav afternoon. Owing to the boisterous northerly weather, the opening ceremony was held indoors, following which two teams had the first “run out” of the season. „ Addressing those present. Mr. P. F. A. Coira. the club captain, apologised for the absence of Mr. R. Semple, M.P., who was to have performed the opening, and for the president, Mr. lan Duncan. Commenting on the Lyall Bay club’s excellent competition record in the past, Mr. Coira said it could be faithfully claimed that this club, together with the sister club, Maranui, on the same beach, had set a standard in surf and life-saving work in New Zealand which had never been surpassed. He expressed the hope that the weather of the coming season would enable members to get in sufficient water and land work and thus fit themselves for the task of preserving the Lyall Bay club’s prestige in surf and life-saving circles. The season was declared officially open by Mr. K. Mclntyre, a vice-president, who urged the members to give their best efforts this season in adding to the club's proud record. A demonstration of rescue and resuscitation was given by two teams, those taking part being:—A team: Mclntyre (1), H. Dickson (2), Mclvor (3), Canham (4), Pearce (5), Blakley (6). Williams (7). S. Muller (captain). B team: Dickson (1), Rex (2). Sealy (3), Rogers (4), Clarke (5), Barrett (6), Lawry (7), W. Griffen (captain).
