THE RACING WORLD

SILVER SCORN AGAIN Easy Win in Canterbury Cup CONCENTRATE IN FORM The Quorn Runs Brilliantly FAVOURITES DO WELL (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Christchurch, Nov. 12. Silver Scorn, the crack three-year-old filly and heroine of the New Zealand Cup meeting, set the seal on her fame in the Canterbury Cup to-day by decisively and even easily defeating the New Zealand Cup winner, Fast Passage, who was her only opponent. The filly, who had won the Spring Plate on the first day, the Derby on the second day, and the Oaks on the third day, all decisively and easily, was considered by some critics not to be up to her reputation as the opposition she had met were poor class. The meeting with Fast Passage was, therefore, looked forward to with eager anticipation, Ihe pace was solid all the way, and this, coupled with the ease with which Silver Scorn disposed of the good mare, completely dispelled any doubts concerning the three-year-old’s class and ability, one has now a record of seven wins in seven starts, and it is impossible yet to judge the limit of her capabilities. Another outstanding performance was that of Concentrate in the Metropolitan Handicap. Finishing with bulldog tenacity, he outstayed all his rivals to win convincingly in record time .for the track. Conditions were admirable for fast times, but Concentrate’s effort was first-class. He won £625 at the meeting and his winnings are now over the five-figure mark. The Quorn put up a brilliant gallop to win the concluding event of the meeting, making the seventh winner for the day from Riccarton stables. As a result of an inquiry into the running of the first race, the Suburban Handicap, in which Morena aud Subdivision met interference, M. Kir.wan, rider ot Elude,, was suspended for one month. . Favourites or well-backed horses aid well, form being well to the fore. Lhe totalisator handled £24,859/10/-, compared with £31,125 for the fourth day last year. This was in keeping with the decreases on the previous days, and the total fpr the meeting was £86,587/10/compared with £109.886/10/- last year, a total decrease of £28,299. A. H. Eastwood had a wonderful run of success. He rode eight winners—three the first day, one on the second, two on the' third day, and two to-day. Juniper Improves. Juniper, favourite for the Highweight, was never further back than second or third. He took the lead off the pacemaker Subdivision at the false rail, and had no difficulty in stalling off a challenge .>y Gold Bag. Pixie Gold was a moderate third, just heading off Elude, with Morena, Punchestown, and Morepork next. It was a good thing for Jumper, who was improved by hisl previous race. Gold Bag was the outsider of the field, and his showing was a surprise. Pixie Gold, Elude, Morena. Punchestown and Morepork ran. fair.races, but never held a winning chance. \ ---■ A Popular Win. High Tor won the hack seven with a ■good run from the middle of the field, but the second horse, Fleeting Glance, came right from the rear, and looked unlucky. Idolise cut out a fast pace to the straight from Hula Belle, Grand Review, Monastic, lan’s March, and Craigavon. The leaders all cracked up under the fast pace, and a furlong from the post High Tor shot away. He was strongly challenged by Fleeting Glance, but she was I just unable to reach him. They were well

clear of Craigavon, who had Hula Belle almost in line. Then came Grand Review, Gold Cross, lan’s March, and Eminent. • T, t High Tor gave owner-trainer K. Longley a very welcome change of luck, and the win was very popular. Fleeting Glance was hampered in the big field, or she would have won. This filly, who finished third in the Oaks, is worth watching. Argentic’s Tilled Win.

Argentic scored his third win at the meeting in the Cressy Handicap, and incidentally put up a very solid performance, for he was last away, and sti]l * a t . but one three furlongs from home. Adelphi made most of the running from La Poupee, Hurli”gham, and Fair weather. Hurlingham headed off Adelphi and La Poupee at the false rail, but just a little later Argentic swept forward with a strong challenge. Sustaining his run, he had the race won a good way off the post, scoring very decisively. Hurlingham just beat La Poupee. Metal Bird, Adelphi, and Tippling were close up. The winner’s performance was outstanding, and he is a really good sort. Ilurlinghara and La Poupee ran well, but they had no chance with the winner. Guarantee is Solid. Guarantee, a hot favourite fpr the two-year-old race, had to be solid to win. Grouse, Cheap Money and Sweet Agnes led him to the straight. Grouse and Sweet Agnes were still in front of him with just over a furlong to go, and he had not caught Sweet Agnes at the half furlong. 'He then settled down to solid galloping, and ridden right out, beat her narrowly. Grouse weakened to a moderate third with Cheap Money well back. Counterplay was left at the post. He was very fractious, and whipped away as tue barrier rose. Guarantee won like a good colt. Concentrate’s Track Record. To win the Metropolitan Handicap Concentrate was pushed, to break the track record, but he still won decisively. Red Racer made the pace from Shatter, Arikira. Red Heckle, Red Sun,’ Historic, Minerval and Concentrate. There was little or no change of importance until they began to race for the straight, where Red Sun had got up close to the leaders, and Concentrate had begun his run. Shatter took the lead off Red Racer at the false rail, and was immediately challenged by Red Heckle, with Concentrate coming fast. A strenuous struggle took place for nearly a furlong, and then Concentrate's tenacity enabled him to draw away from Red Heckle for a decisive win. _ Shatter was a moderate third, with Historic a close fourth, then came Red Sun, Minerval and Red Racer, with Arikira last. Concentrate improved as the meeting progressed, and is now at the top of his form. Red Heckle ran well, but had every chance, as also did Historic, who got a great run on the rails throughout. Minerval ran below his Cup showing. Shafter was another who had every chance, and he badly disappointed his party. Silver Scorn Shows Class. With Concentrate in the Metropolitan and Silver Ring lame, the Canterbury Cup field of four resolved itself into a match between Fast Passage and Silver Scorn. It attracted very little interest on the machine, but as a race it was first class.' Fast Passage,, on the rails, led with Silver Scorn varying her pace to lie within a length to half a length on the outside. Silver Scorn ranged alongside half a mile from home and once in the straight came on to win with Eastwood sitting still, while Fast Passage was being hard ridden. The time, 2min. 4sec., is seldom beaten and Silver Scorn just played with her opponent, putting a definite seal on her class. Another Good One. Berate, a sister in blood to Silver Scorn, scored an emphatic win in the three-yea> old handicap. Lady Zephyr and Grampian led her and Rocket to the straight, Silver Sight getting off slowly. Once in line Berate went to the front and won easily, Tout le Mond coming through for second, with Silver Sight running over the others for third. Rocket was fourth and Shamfight headed the others. Berate is good. There is no: doubt about it. She may be even as good, if not better than Silver Scorn by the autumn. Tout lo Mond and Rocket ran solid races, and Silver Sight wms a trifle unlucky. The Quorn All the Way. The Quorn led all the way in the concluding event and scored a brilliant victory in fast time, but Korokio was very unlucky. The Quorn jumped away well with Cricket Bat, and this pair led to the turn from Great Star, Grecian Prince, Merry Peel, Wise Choice and Korokio all closely bunched. Half a mile from home Wise Choice weakened and fell back, taking Korokio with her, and the latter was last into the straight. From there she unwound a brilliant run, but The Quorn had run on solidly in front and had no difficulty in stalling off her challenge. Cricket Bat was a close third, with Merry Peel, Grecian Prince and Arrow Lad all close up. ■ , ■ . . The Quorn was vigorously handled by Wiggins and once Korokio fell back he was never seriously threatened. Korokio ran very solidly, and so did Cricket Bat and Merry Peel. Grecian Prince is beginning to show form again. Details of the Racing HANDICAP, of 150 sovs.; second 30 sovs., third 10 sovs. One 1 Geo. Gould's b. g. JUNIPER, by Kilbroney—Judith, Oyrs., 10.4 ...
