AWARUA: Hauraki, Makura, Paua. KARAMEA STRUCK BY LIGHTNING While anchored in the fairway outside Port Adelaide at 8.30 p.m. on October 30, the Shaw-Savill motor-ship Karamea was struck by lightning. The truck of the main mast was splintered, but the wireless aerial was undamaged. When the vessel reached Melbourne the truck, which had been temporarily repaired, still bore evidence of the damage caused by the lightning. Officers and seamen said the flash had temporarily blinded them, and that the accompanying noise had brought the whole of the ship’s company on deck. RESERVE OF £ll. The French sailing ship General de Sonis was offered for sale by auction in Havre recently, but no bids were forthcoming. The reserve figure is stated to have been only 1000 fr., equivalent to £ll. She was built at Nantes in 1901, and is of 2190 tons gross.

AUSTRALIAN TRADE Union Cargo Service The following are the movements of Union Company vessels engaged in its intercolonial cargo service:— The Gabriella, which has been laid up at Wellington for overhaul and survey, is to leave here to-morrow for Newcastle to load for Wellington and Miramar. She will then return to Newcastle and Sydney to load for Wanganui. The Kalingo, from Newcastle, via Napier, arrived at Wellington last night and berthed at the King's Wharf. From here she will proceed to Greymouth and Westport, thence to Sydney and Newcastle to load for Napier and Gisborne. She will then return to Greymouth to load for Sydney and Brisbane. The Karepo left Greymouth on Saturday for Westport to complete loading for New Plymouth and Auckland. She will then lay up for survey. The vessel will resume about December 1, leaving for Greymouth to load for Melbourne, thence to Adelaide, Edithburg, Melbourne, and Hobart to load for Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington, arid Auckland. The Karetu, from Auckland, is due at Newcastle to-morrow, thence to Sydney to complete loading for Fiji, Nukualofa and Auckland. The Kiwitea left Greymouth, on Saturday for Westport, thenee to Melbourne. She will then load at Edithburg, Adelaide and Melbourne for New Plymouth, Auckland, Napier, and Wellington. The Waikouaiti left Bluff on Saturday for Sydney, thence to Newcastle and Sydney to load for Bluff, Dunedin, Timaru, and Lyttelton. The Shaw-Savill Company has received cabled advice that the Pakeha left London last Friday morning for Suva, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff and New Plymouth. She is due at Suva on December 19 and at Lyttelton on December 26. AUSTRALIND AT AUCKLAND. From New York, via Newport News and Gulf of Mexico ports, the A. and A. Line chartered motor-ship Australind reached Auckland early on Saturday morning. She is to leave there again nt 10 p.m. to-day for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin arid Australia to complete discharge, and is due here on Thursday morning. The Federal Company are the local agents. OTIRA AT LONDON. Cabled advice has been received by the Shaw-Savill Company that the Otira reached London last Friday morning. She left Auckland on September 29 for London, via Cape Horn, Montevideo and Teneriffe. MONOWAI DUE 6 A.M. TO-DAY. The Union Company has received a further wireless message from its liner Monowai, en route from San Francisco to Wellington, via Papeete and Rarotonga, reporting that she now expects to arrive in the- stream at 6 o’clock tnis morning. She will berth about 8.30 a.m. at No. 1 south Queen’s Wharf. The Monowai is timed to leave here again at 3 p.m. ■, to-morrow for Sydney. She will then withdraw from the San Francisco mail service and enter the intercolonial run. The Maunganui will take the Monowai’s running, leaving Sydney on November 24 for Wellington, Rarotonga, Papeete and San Francisco. , • , TANKER THORDIS. Running under charter to the Shell Oil Company the Norwegian tanker Thordis is due at Wellington this morning from Auckland, and will berth at the Burnham Wharf to discharge bulk motor-spirit from San Pedro. She is to leave here again to-morrow for Lyttelton and Dunedin to complete discharge. THE WAIHEMO. The Union Company’s Waihemo was scheduled to clear Los Angeles on Saturday for Papeete, Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Australia. She is due at Auckland on December 6. AUCKLAND SERVICE. The Waimarino, from Portland and Auckland, arrived at Wellington yesterday morning, and berthed at No. 16 Queen’d Wharf. She is to leave here again to-day for Lyttelton and Dunedin, and returns via ports to Wellington and Auckland. The Waipiata, from Bluff via ports, is due here on Thursday, and goes on to Auckland. The motor-ship Port Whangarei, from Dunedin ria Auckland, is due here on Thursday, and goes on to Tauranga, Auckland and Whangarei. The Wingatui is to leave Auckland on Thursday for Wellington and southern ports, and is due here next Sunday. NOTICE TO MARINERS. The Marine Department advise that the sloops Laburnum and Veronica 'will be carrying out gunnery practice in the Hauraki Gulf from December 5 to December 8, inclusive. The programme includes full calibre firing on the morning of December 6, and on the morning and after dark on December ,8. GREYMOUTH BAR. I The Greymouth bar was workable on Saturday morning, and the Kaimiro, Karepo, Kiwitea and Kanna cleared the bar. RANGITIKI’S MOVEMENTS. THE OLIVEBANK. The Bank Line motor-ship Olivebank, en route from Java with a cargo of raw sugar, is now expected to reach Auckland next Saturday. CAITHNESS AT AUCKLAND. Wtih a cargo of sulphur from Galveston. the steamer Caithness reached Auckland on Saturday night from Galveston,, Texas. She will later proceed to Lyttelton, Wanganui and Sydney, to complete discharge. PORT DUNEDIN’S MOVEMENTS. The C. and D. Line motor-ship, Port Dunedin, is due at New Plymouth this morning from Dunedin to continue het Homeward loading. She will later complete at Wellington, Gisborne and Auckland, is due here next Friday, and is scheduled to clear Auckland finally on November 29 for London, via Cape'Horn and Dakar. END OF THE RIMU. The hull of the steamer Rimu. which. Ims been completely dismantled, was tnn-ed by launch on Thursday to Roto Roa Island, where it will be used as a breakwater near the landing, states “The Nev.Zealand Herald.” The steamer, which was Built in 1898. and was originallv engaged in the South Island coastal trade, was bought by the Northern Company m 190 S and used in the nassenger and cargo service on the West Coast. For the past six years she has been lying idle in th" stream, -until she was purchased thre r months ago for breaking up.
