For the five weeks ended October 3, 31,414,000 gallons of water have been pumped for the Lower Hutt supply. Willows along the banks of the Hutt River are now in their full glory. From Petone upward they extend in a long line of vivid foliage. They are best seen to advantage at the Silverstream railway bridge, where the long tendrils droop in picturesque masses. Mr. A. J. Gearing, secretary of the Hutt River Board, who underwent an operation on Monday, is making satisfactory progress. EASTBOURNE GAS Result of Canvass REPORT TO COUNCIL . Details of a canvass of some 900 residents in the area from Howard Road to Eastbourne to ascertain the number .who would be agreeable to install gas if it were reticulated, were received from the Eastbourne council by the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board last evening. Favourable replies were received from 234 , persons, who indicated that they would consider installing the following appliances:—l77 cookers, 19 coppers, 44 caliphonts, 88 rings. 9 heaters, and 32 hot water services. In addition, a number advised the canvasser that they would probably consider installing gas ata later date should the board decide to reticulate the district. ■ The chairman of the-board, Mr. W. G. Lodder. thought that the response was not-sufficient to warrant the spending of the money. . ' Mr. A. Scholefield stated . that the board should be sure of the interest on the money which would be expended, as it might be a burden on the consumers. The question was deferred until a later meetipg. -. GAS LIGHTING BOARD Business at Meeting The Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board met last night, the chairman,. Mr. W. G. Lodder, presiding. There were present: Messrs. E. T. E. Hogg, C. P. Brockelbank, A. Scholefield, W. G. Meldrum, S. Clendon, and W. T. Strand. On the motion of Mr. W. T. Strand three items on the order paper were deferred to a special meeting to be held on Friday night. . . The items were: (a) The motion of Mr. C.' P. Brockelbank that the board sever its connection with the Petone Borough Council and establish its own clerical staff; (b) the resignation of the secretary of the board, Mr. W. F. Sturman. who has been appointed town clerk of Invercargill; (c) a special report from the treasurer dealing with the financial side of the manufacture of gas. In moving his motion, which was seconded by Mr. E. T. E, Hogg, Mr. Strand said that he would like more information on the. matters. Since the last meeting of the board there had been a change in conditions which had not been contemplated. The motion was carried, Messrs. Brockelbank and A. Scholefield dissenting. The Central Bowling Club was granted the lease of a strip of land near the gasworks at a cost of £3/10/- a year. According to the report of the distribution officer, Mr. O. Silbery, the mew services comprised eight new cookers, one caliphont, one water heater, and 17 new meters. The Works engineer, Mr. C. Shaw, reported that the gas manufactured amounted to 9,799,000 cubic feet.' an increase over September of 454,000 cubic feet. The average calorific value was 464 B.Th.Us.. and the average make per ton was 13,763 cubic, feet. Coal in stock at November 1 was 689 tons 10 cwt. Estimated coke in stock was 17 tons, and tar was 35,582 gallons. _ The Petone Relief Committee had received 15cwt. of coke, and the Lower Hutt committee lOcwt. TENNIS ACTIVITY St. Paul’s Club Opened Although weather conditions were unfavourable, the St. Paul’s Tennis Club, Waiwetu, held its official opening on Saturday. ... . r The club’s president, Archdeacon A. L. Hansell, in declaring the season opened, congratulated the club on its meritorious effort in laying down two courts in one season. The fact that -both courts were laid down by the voluntary services of the club members reflected great credit on them, and if keenness counted for anything the club should go a long way in competitive tennis. The Archdeacon stressed the necessity for the churches of to-day to provide entertainment for their young people, and considered that church tennis clubs were an important asset in holding young people to the church. ' After the opening, official sets were played, and were followed by afternoon tCcl, , 1 ' In the evening, a large number of visitors and members attended a dance in St. Paul’s Church Hall. A programme of old and modern dances was arranged, and the music was provided by Mr. Mailman. Mr. K. Milne was M.C. Prizes I for Monte Carlo dances were wou by Miss 11. Thomson and Mr. T. Newbolt. and Miss P. Martin and Mr. R Woods. Competitions for cakes were won by Mr. Jolly and Miss.F. Clout. An exhibition of tap dancing was given by several women members of the club. ' Among those present were: Mesdames Robinson, Foote, Scoon, Gray. Newbold, Jollv, Sparks and Staples. Misses loote, Baylis. McNicol, Tiber. Graham. Thomson, Candy, Owen. Berriman, Stead. Pearce, Clout. (2), Ensor, Parsons, Jones, E. Ziver, Robertson. Martin (2), Knox. Treseder. Jollards, Dowland, Shand and Cunningham. Messrs. Foote, Sparks, Newbold, Jolly, Milne, Champness. Roberts, Grav, Butterfield, Nash, Wright, Woods, Martin (2). Robinson, Eason. Berriman, Odium, Jollard, Mackie, Ode.l and Jones. SCHOOL CRICKET Fixtures for Saturday The following competition cricket matches in the school grade will be played on Friday next:— Upper Valley ’Section.—Trentham v. Silvcrst.ream, at Silverstream; Upper Hutt v. St. Patrick’s College, at Maidstone Park. Lower Valley Section.—Junior: Hutt Convent v. Wllford, Hutt Recreation No. 3; Randwick v. Petone Central, North Park No. 2; Petone West. cv. Hutt Central, North Park No. 3; Eastern Hutt v. Waiwetu. Wilford. Senior: No games will be played.
