WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
The monthly meeting of the Upper Hutt Women’s Institute was held in the Druids’ Hall, Upper Hutt, recently. During the afternoon there were two demonstrations. Mrs. Huse. of Haywards, demonstrated smocking, and Mrs. Williams, of Wallaceville, thrift slippers. These items were much appreciated by all present. The demonstrators and the president, Mrs. Kogers, received posies from the members. An enjoyable and instructive afternoon was attended by fifty-three members. Membership is increasing rapidly, and the enthusiasm and interest displayed at the meeting augurs well for the future of the institute. The recent monthly meeting of the Women’s Institute was held at Keikorangi on November 3. Mrs. G. A. Monk presided over a good atendance. 'L'bc meeting opened with the institute song, after which Miss L. Mowbray gave an interesting talk on the half-yearly conference at Woodville, which she attended as delegate. The secretary announced that the library continued to grow, 103 books having been lent during the month. Mrs. M. Davis, of Paekakariki. gave an Interesting demonstration on canetray making. After afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mrs. Nielsen, Mrs. F. Monk and Miss Stubbings, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Davis. The competition for fancywork in coloured cotton brought forth some beautiful specimens of work, the winners being:—Seniors: Miss Carter. 1: Miss Nielsen and Mrs. Bowman. 2. Juniors: Miss Symonds. 1: Miss Spnckman. 2: Miss Smith. 3.
