MUNICIPAL RATES
Steady Reduction in England
ELECTIONS TO-DAY
Official Wireless. Rugby, Oct. 29. The campaign in connection with the municipal elections next Tuesday to fill the vacancies caused by the retirement in rotation of members of borough councils in nearly 300 cities and towns in England outside the London County Council area, is actively proceeding. Last year Labour and Socialist candidates suffered a net loss of 200 seats in about 80 of the larger boroughs, and in view of their opposition to reduction in local expenditure this question is in most cases the dominant issue of the present elections. Local rates have, however, been steadily reduced in the last five years, and the decrease since 1928 exceeds 7 per cent. The average rates have fallen in that period from 12/10} to 11/li in the £l. The amount collected from the whole body of ratepayers in England and Wales in the last financial year was £148,000,000.
